What began as an argument over a parking space outside a South Florida Walmart ended with a retired Army veteran dead, a woman claiming self-defense, and a community struggling to understand how a routine disagreement turned fatal.

Bart Diguglielmo, 62, a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant, former trauma nurse, and Desert Storm veteran, died after being shot during a confrontation in the parking lot of a Walmart in North Lauderdale, Florida, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The shooting occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. on June 30 and was captured from multiple angles by cellphone cameras and nearby vehicles.

Authorities say Diguglielmo and an unidentified woman became involved in a dispute over a parking space before the encounter escalated. The woman remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and told detectives she fired in self-defense. No charges have been announced, and the case will be presented to the Broward State Attorney’s Office for review.

Video reviewed by local media appears to show Diguglielmo approaching the woman while she backs away with a firearm drawn. A single shot is fired, striking Diguglielmo in the stomach. He later died at Broward Health Medical Center.

The footage has ignited fierce debate online, with some viewers arguing the woman’s actions appear justified and others questioning whether deadly force was warranted. Investigators have not publicly stated whether they believe the self-defense claim is valid.

As the legal questions continue, family members are focused on remembering the man they lost. “He was a Christian man and a very good person and would not hurt anyone,” Diguglielmo’s sister told CBS Miami. She described her brother as a decorated veteran who served during Operation Desert Storm and later spent decades helping others as a nurse.

His daughter Amanda, speaking through tears to Local 10 News, pushed back against online speculation about her father’s behavior in the moments before the shooting. “I just don’t think anybody deserved to lose their life over a parking spot,” she said.

Amanda also challenged reports suggesting her father may have behaved aggressively toward the woman. “Another says it was because my dad was making some type of advance towards the woman, which I will completely debunk because my dad is not that person,” she said. “He’s not perfect, but not someone that would do this to this extreme.”

Witness David Anderson recalled arriving at the scene moments after the shooting. “I was walking up and heard a lady screaming,” Anderson told CBS Miami. “She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things.”

The investigation remains active. Detectives continue reviewing video footage and witness statements as prosecutors determine whether criminal charges are appropriate.
