Canadian woman accused of slapping teen over Trump clothing now facing criminal charges and ICE detention

A political confrontation on the Jersey Shore has exploded into a criminal case and an immigration battle after a Canadian woman was charged with allegedly striking a teenage girl over pro-Trump apparel during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Authorities say 33-year-old Kaitlyn E. Tracey was arrested Monday in connection with an incident that occurred July 3 on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk.

According to court documents and local reports, Tracey allegedly approached a group of teenage girls after taking issue with clothing worn by some members of the group. Police say two of the minors were wearing patriotic-colored sweatpants displaying the words “Trump” and “ICE” when the encounter escalated.

Investigators allege Tracey struck one of the girls across the face and body before leaving the area.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured portions of the incident and helped authorities identify Tracey after an investigation by local police. She was subsequently charged with endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault, harassment and obstruction. Authorities have indicated that the teenage victim did not suffer serious injuries.

The criminal case alone would likely have generated local headlines. What happened next pushed the story onto the national stage.

According to her husband, Tracey was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement shortly after her arrest and transferred to the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark.

Her husband, Matthew Geroni, publicly confirmed the detention in videos posted online, saying his primary concern is his wife’s safety and legal situation.

“Yesterday, July 13, my wife was detained by ICE and brought to Delaney Hall in Newark, NJ,” Geroni said in a social media appeal.

Geroni, an American citizen, stated that Tracey entered the United States using a passport in 2024 and has been living with him in Asbury Park. He also said he had attempted to raise money for legal expenses before an online fundraising effort was removed.

While Geroni argued that aspects of the story were being taken out of context, he did not publicly dispute that the boardwalk confrontation occurred.

The Trump administration has dramatically expanded enforcement operations, particularly involving non-citizens who become entangled in criminal investigations.

Immigration attorneys note that criminal charges—even relatively minor ones—can trigger immigration consequences depending on a person’s legal status, history and circumstances.

Civil liberties advocates argue that immigration detention should not automatically follow every arrest and have questioned whether public pressure surrounding politically charged incidents influences enforcement decisions.

The legal questions surrounding Tracey’s immigration status will likely unfold separately from the criminal charges pending in New Jersey court.

She is currently scheduled to appear in court on August 4.

During the evening of 7/3/26, Officers responded to and began investigating an alleged assault of a female juvenile by an adult female suspect on the boardwalk. The female suspect began yelling at the female juvenile over patriotic colored sweatpants with political wording. The female suspect was then seen on video striking the juvenile female, once to the body and once to the face, with an open hand. The female suspect then left the scene without being identified.

After an investigation done by PPBPD Detective Bureau, this agency was able to identify Kaitlyn Tracey of Allenhurst, NJ as the suspect for this incident, on 7/6/26. At that time Ms. Tracey was charged with Simple Assault (2C:12-1A(1)), Endangering the Welfare of a Child (2C:24-4A(2)), Harassment (2C:33-4A) and Obstruction (2C:29-1A) by Detective Korey McCormack of the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department.

In the early morning of 7/13/26, Ms. Tracey was taken into custody at HQ, without incident. Ms. Tracey was processed and transported to Ocean County Jail where she will be held until she has a detention hearing as per NJ Bail Reform Act.

We would like to thank the Asbury Park Police Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, The 11th District of the Toronto Police Service, and the United States Custom and Border Protection Intelligence Team for their assistance during this investigation.
We remind the public that all individuals charged are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Thank you
