According to a federal search warrant first reported by the Houston Chronicle, investigators sought permission to search the van driven by Lorenzo Salgado Araujo after observing what court documents described as three plastic bags containing a “white crystal-like substance” inside the vehicle. Authorities reportedly sought the warrant to determine whether narcotics were present. At the time the warrant was filed, no laboratory testing had confirmed the substance’s identity.

The disclosure arrives as the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain fiercely disputed.

The Department of Homeland Security has maintained that ICE agents attempted to stop the van during an enforcement operation and that Salgado used the vehicle in a manner agents perceived as a threat. DHS previously stated that an officer fired after Salgado allegedly attempted to use the van as a weapon.

Witnesses and attorneys representing passengers in the vehicle have sharply challenged that account.

Several detainees told investigators and media outlets that no officer was directly threatened and that the shooting occurred through a passenger-side window. They dispute federal claims that the van was used to attack agents.

What is not disputed is that Salgado was not the primary target of the enforcement operation. Federal officials later acknowledged that ICE agents had been seeking different individuals and that Salgado was not the person they initially intended to apprehend.

That revelation fueled protests in Houston and drew criticism from Democratic lawmakers and immigrant-rights groups demanding additional transparency. Community activists have called for the release of more evidence, including any surveillance footage, investigative reports, and witness statements.

Yet the newly revealed warrant adds another layer to a story that many commentators had already declared solved.

The warrant itself does not prove criminal conduct, nor does it establish what the substance was. But it does demonstrate that federal investigators believed there was sufficient reason to seek a narcotics-related search of the vehicle.

That detail was largely absent from much of the early national coverage.

As the investigations continue, both sides are digging in.
