Hasan Piker goes full Chairman Mao dress in front of cheering College Democrats

HASAN PIKER BRINGS HIS MAO ROUTINE TO COLLEGE DEMOCRATS — AND THE CROWD APPLAUDS

The Democratic Party’s ongoing battle between its progressive activists and its increasingly endangered moderates received a wardrobe upgrade over the weekend when far-left streamer Hasan Piker addressed the College Democrats of America convention wearing an outfit widely compared to the trademark style of Chinese Communist dictator Mao Zedong.

Piker appeared as a surprise speaker at the organization’s summer convention in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, July 18. Standing before a crowd of young Democrats, he urged students to reject not only President Donald Trump but also members of their own party who refuse to follow the activist Left’s agenda.

“No more to Trumpism, but no more to the Democrats who compromise, who conciliate, and who betray us,” Piker declared as the audience applauded.

He then broadened his attack to include Democrats who support immigration enforcement, Israel, conventional energy policies or business interests.

“No more to the fascist reactionaries,” Piker said, before condemning Democrats who, in his words, “collaborate and cooperate with the fascists,” “fund ICE,” “fund Israel,” “help poison the planet” and “stiff workers and help bosses.”

Clips of the speech quickly spread across social media, where critics focused as much on Piker’s Mao-like appearance as on his revolutionary language. A post from DSA Watch characterized the remarks as a “Hitler-style speech,” prompting Piker to accuse his critics of treating opposition to Trump, ICE funding and Israel as extremism.

Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt offered a less diplomatic assessment.

“Hasan Piker dressed as Mao, brainwashing your kids at college,” Pratt wrote. “They’re communists. This was always communism.”

Republican strategist Matt Whitlock described the spectacle as “faculty lounge cosplay communism,” while CNN commentator Scott Jennings joked about “the amount of costumery required to be a Leftist in good standing.”

The clothing controversy became more difficult for Piker to dismiss after a separate video resurfaced showing him praising Mao during a previous livestream. Discussing a visit to China, Piker said he would “never” criticize Mao and described him as “one of the great leaders of this world.” That clip began circulating again following the College Democrats appearance, adding fuel to accusations that the outfit was more than an accidental fashion choice.

Mao governed the People’s Republic of China from its founding in 1949 until his death in 1976. His Great Leap Forward and other political campaigns were associated with mass famine, persecution and the deaths of millions. Estimates vary significantly, but Mao’s rule remains one of the deadliest communist regimes of the 20th century.

Piker commands millions of followers across Twitch, YouTube, Instagram and other platforms, giving him a substantial audience among younger, progressive voters. His increasing involvement in Democratic campaigns has already exposed deep divisions inside the party.

Earlier this year, Piker campaigned in Michigan with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, appearing at events at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. CBS News reported that the appearances drew criticism from El-Sayed’s Democratic opponents, the Anti-Defamation League and the center-left group Third Way.

Rep. Haley Stevens called El-Sayed’s decision to campaign with Piker “unacceptable.” Then-candidate Mallory McMorrow compared Piker’s social-media strategy to that of Nick Fuentes, describing both as figures who make inflammatory remarks to generate attention.

El-Sayed defended the association, saying he was interested in reaching voters who felt excluded from conventional politics. Supporters similarly argued that Piker can bring politically disengaged young men into the Democratic coalition.

That argument appears to be gaining traction among progressive candidates. Piker has supported or appeared alongside several politicians from the Democratic Party’s socialist wing, and he has become a prominent defender of candidates attempting to push the party further left. Reporting throughout 2026 has described a widening Democratic dispute over whether Piker offers access to a valuable online audience or presents an unacceptable political liability.

The College Democrats controversy placed that dispute directly in front of the party’s next generation.

One College Democrats executive board member told Fox News that inviting Piker was “antithetical” to the image common-sense Democrats are attempting to present before the November midterm elections. The board member warned that platforming provocative outside personalities could damage the party’s appeal among ordinary voters.

J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami, whose organization helped sponsor the convention, took a different view. Before Piker’s appearance, Ben-Ami told Jewish Insider that J Street was “proud” to sponsor the gathering after Piker was announced as its surprise speaker.

That leaves Democrats with a question they may not be able to avoid much longer: Is Hasan Piker an independent entertainer who merely happens to support progressive candidates, or is he becoming one of the public faces of the party’s emerging activist base? Judging by the applause in Washington, plenty of College Democrats have already made their choice.

MY TAKE:

Nothing screams “fresh new direction for the Democratic Party” quite like dressing up as the chairman of a communist dictatorship and scolding everyone who is not sufficiently revolutionary.

Apparently, business casual is out. Cultural Revolution casual is in.

And please spare us the usual routine about how nobody is really advocating communism. The man arrived looking like Mao, has publicly praised Mao and delivered a speech demanding ideological purification while the College Democrats applauded. At some point the duck is wearing a little green military tunic, quoting Marx and handing out collectivized bread.

The funniest part is that Democrats spent years warning America that Donald Trump’s red hats were terrifying symbols of political extremism. Now one of the Left’s biggest influencers can show up dressed like a dictator whose policies helped kill millions, and we are supposed to admire his bold critique of capitalism.

Hasan Piker may be many things, but subtle is not one of them.

The larger problem belongs to the Democratic Party. Its leaders keep insisting that the socialist fringe is merely a noisy minority. Yet that noisy minority keeps winning invitations, drawing crowds, campaigning with Democratic candidates and receiving applause at Democratic conventions.

The fringe appears to have excellent seats.
