Gasparino questions timing of new Canada tariffs: ‘not a time to be screwing around here’

by

BS BRIEF:

  • President Donald Trump announced an additional 50% tariff on roughly $20 billion in Canadian imports, as the administration continues reshaping trade policy following changes to its tariff authority. (Reuters)
  • Fox Business correspondent Charlie Gasparino publicly questioned the timing, saying economic conditions make it “not a time to be screwing around here,” despite acknowledging his broader criticisms of Canada’s policies.
The new tariffs have renewed debate over inflation, supply chains and the future of U.S.-Canada trade relations as businesses await additional tariff announcements.

Fox Business debate highlights divisions over Trump’s latest Canada tariffs

A lively discussion on Fox Business underscored the continuing debate over the economic consequences of President Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs targeting Canadian imports.

During The Big Money Show, host Dagen McDowell outlined the administration’s plan to impose an additional 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including products ranging from cement to sporting equipment.

The discussion focused less on the political rationale behind the tariffs than on their potential economic effects.

Co-host Taylor Riggs cited estimates suggesting that while wholesalers could absorb much of the additional cost, consumer prices might experience only a limited increase.

“Core goods were actually deflationary,” Riggs said, adding that some estimates suggested the tariffs might contribute only a modest increase to consumer inflation even under more aggressive pricing assumptions.

Charlie Gasparino agreed that he often sympathizes with criticism of Canada’s economic policies but questioned whether now is the right time for another escalation in trade tensions.

“I can’t stand Canada. They’re just too socialist, they’re just so woke, and they take for granted what we do for them.”

Gasparino then emphasized that his concern centered on financial markets rather than politics. “I intellectually want to—or emotionally want to—side with Trump on this thing, but intellectually and financially, I worry about tariffs.”

He concluded:

“This is not a time to be screwing around here.”

Supporters of tariffs argue they strengthen American manufacturing, encourage domestic production and provide leverage during trade negotiations. Critics contend they can increase costs for businesses, complicate supply chains and contribute to higher prices, though economists continue to debate how much of any tariff is ultimately passed on to consumers.

The United States and Canada remain each other’s largest trading partners, with hundreds of billions of dollars in annual cross-border commerce. As a result, changes in tariff policy can affect manufacturers, retailers, agricultural producers and consumers on both sides of the border.

Financial markets have generally remained resilient despite recent tariff announcements, though investors continue monitoring inflation data, Treasury yields and upcoming administration trade decisions.
