Former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci is set to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee next Wednesday in what is expected to be another closely watched hearing examining the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fauci, who retired from federal service in late 2022 after more than five decades in government, became one of the most recognizable public health officials in the country. His guidance, public messaging and testimony before Congress made him one of the most untrusted villains of the pandemic.

The hearing also follows renewed public criticism from Trump administration adviser Peter Navarro, who recently argued Fauci should be held accountable for decisions made during the pandemic.
“He needs to be held accountable,” Navarro said during a television interview, criticizing federal support for research involving coronaviruses and the government’s broader handling of COVID-19.
Fauci has consistently denied allegations that he funded research intended to create the virus responsible for the pandemic. Previous congressional testimony and multiple government reviews have examined those claims, while debate over the precise origins of COVID-19 continues among intelligence agencies and researchers.
The hearing also revives discussion surrounding former President Joe Biden’s decision to issue Fauci a preemptive pardon during the final hours of his presidency.
Announcing that decision, Biden praised Fauci’s decades of public service.
“For more than half a century, Dr. Fauci served our country,” Biden said in a statement. “He saved countless lives by managing the government’s response to pressing health crises… The United States is safer and healthier because of him.”
The July 29 hearing is expected to provide senators from both parties another opportunity to question Fauci directly about decisions that continue to shape public debate years after the height of the pandemic.
