Anne Hathaway probably didn’t expect an acceptance speech she delivered nearly a decade ago to become one of the hottest political debates on social media in 2026.
But that’s exactly what happened after clips from Hathaway’s September 2018 Human Rights Campaign National Dinner speech resurfaced online, racking up millions of views and prompting an avalanche of reactions from conservative commentators, media personalities and Elon Musk.
The Oscar-winning actress, who received the Human Rights Campaign’s National Equality Award in 2018, argued that society operates around what she described as a “damaging and widely accepted myth.”
“With the exception of being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current center of a damaging and widely accepted myth,” Hathaway said.
She continued:
“That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness.”
Hathaway argued that the belief “keeps money and power in the hands of the few, instead of being invested in the lives of the free.” She concluded that she rejected the idea and, together with her “comrades,” intended to “destroy” it.
The comments largely escaped public attention for years until recent social media posts revived the clip, sending it racing across X where it quickly accumulated millions of views.
Among the first high-profile critics was conservative radio host Buck Sexton.
“Imagine being so narcissistic and deluded that you’d say something like this in front of a crowd because you think it makes you sound wise and virtuous,” Sexton wrote.
Fox News contributor Tomi Lahren also blasted Hathaway’s remarks.
“A reminder that her standing up there on her perch in her fancy gown and updo delivering this self-righteous lecture cost her absolutely zero,” Lahren wrote. “She makes no sacrifice. She loses nothing. Yet she is hailed as brave and bold. For what? Words.”
Elon Musk joined the pile-on, dismissing Hathaway as someone merely reciting approved talking points rather than expressing independent thought.
“She’s just reading the script someone else wrote. No critical thinking is happening here at all,” Musk posted on X. He later added that Hathaway was “just a marionette” and mocked her further as criticism of the speech continued.
Marketing professor Gad Saad released a lengthy video criticizing what he described as Hollywood elitism, while conservative commentator Link Lauren questioned Hathaway’s criticism of power structures, noting that the actress herself has enjoyed enormous wealth and success in the entertainment industry.
The renewed attention comes as Hathaway is enjoying box-office success with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, a film that has also become the subject of broader online cultural debates surrounding casting decisions and Hollywood politics.
Back in 2018, this language earned standing ovations in elite circles. Today, many Americans hear phrases like “destroy the myth of whiteness” and wonder why wealthy celebrities feel compelled to lecture ordinary people about privilege while accepting trophies in designer gowns.
Social media has changed the game. Nothing disappears anymore. A speech that barely registered outside activist audiences eight years ago can suddenly reappear and become the biggest conversation of the weekend.
