TRUMP UNVEILS $22 BILLION PLAN TO TRANSFORM DULLES INTO A WORLD-CLASS GATEWAY

President Donald Trump rolled out an ambitious vision Wednesday to remake Washington Dulles International Airport, promising travelers a dramatically different experience while preserving the airport’s iconic architecture.

Standing alongside Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and aviation leaders, Trump described the project as far more than a routine renovation.

“We’re going to replace the C and D concourses and preserve the iconic original terminal that first made the airport an architectural landmark,” Trump said. “It will be beautiful.”

Among the most eye-catching features is a 32,000-space parking garage immediately across from the terminal, connected by multiple enclosed glass bridges.

“It’ll be the largest garage in the world,” Trump said while discussing the plans. “People don’t like going down underneath. Mostly above ground. It’ll be beautiful.”

The administration also plans to eliminate the airport’s aging mobile lounges—often nicknamed the “people movers”—that have frustrated travelers for decades. In their place would be expanded AeroTrain service, new pedestrian tunnels, moving walkways and significantly shorter walks between terminals and gates.

The broader redevelopment would replace the aging C and D concourses with modern facilities, create additional gates capable of handling larger aircraft, expand shopping and dining, improve baggage handling, and build a larger international arrivals facility. The historic Saarinen-designed main terminal would remain the centerpiece of the airport while receiving extensive upgrades.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby praised the effort, saying the modernization will create a dramatically improved passenger experience at the airline’s largest East Coast hub. United currently handles roughly 70 percent of Dulles traffic and has been working with airport officials on long-term expansion plans.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the proposal part of a broader effort to make the nation’s capital a showcase worthy of the United States, arguing America’s front door should reflect the country’s stature on the world stage.

The project would be financed primarily through airport revenue bonds and airline investment rather than direct congressional appropriations, although portions could still require federal approvals before construction begins.
