Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has spent months trying to keep the Department of Homeland Security out of the headlines.

Mission accomplished.

Unfortunately for him, now he’s the headline.

A growing chorus of immigration hardliners is openly questioning whether Mullin is the right man to oversee President Trump’s border agenda after comments he made over the weekend were interpreted by some conservatives as opening the door to expanded legal immigration.

Speaking Saturday at the National Governors Association meeting in Oklahoma City, Mullin argued that America should explore “more permanent solutions” for employment visas in industries struggling to find workers.

“If we’re looking to grow our economy, we need more permanent solutions on work visas,” Mullin said.

He added that while “we want to take care of Americans first,” there are industries where legal foreign labor could help fill shortages.

Those comments landed like a hand grenade inside parts of MAGA World.

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon blasted Mullin, telling Politico, “Mullin is the wrong guy at the wrong time for the wrong job—a time when we need focus on mass deportations, we get an amnesty advocate.”

Other prominent conservative voices, including Laura Loomer, Jake Posobiec and former Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino, echoed similar frustrations, arguing Mullin’s message risked confusing Trump’s hard-line immigration agenda.

Mullin quickly responded on X.

“NO amnesty for illegal aliens. Ever.“

“If you are illegally present in the United States of America—you will be detained and deported. Period.”

That clarification, however, did little to calm critics. Politico reported Monday that dissatisfaction isn’t limited to outside activists. According to the outlet, frustration has also surfaced inside the administration itself, with one anonymous senior White House official offering a brutally colorful assessment of Mullin’s performance.

Another source described the secretary as “a people pleaser,” suggesting that approach clashes with the demands of leading one of the administration’s most politically charged departments.

“Everyone agrees he sucks donkey butt.” That’s how one anonymous senior Trump administration official described Mullin in comments first reported by Politico, underscoring the growing frustration surrounding the Cabinet secretary despite President Trump’s public support.

Still, the criticism comes alongside measurable immigration enforcement gains.

According to administration figures, ICE continues making thousands of arrests weekly, detention populations remain above 60,000 migrants, and deportations continue at a pace well above previous years. Earlier this summer, Mullin said the department was “staying focused on all illegals” while deliberately reducing public attention around enforcement operations.

White House deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson dismissed speculation that Mullin’s job is in danger. “The President has confidence in Secretary Mullin and his entire Administration to carry out the agenda the American people voted for,” she said.

That public vote of confidence is notable because Mullin has already weathered several difficult moments since replacing former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem earlier this year.

He has faced criticism from Democrats over immigration enforcement tactics while simultaneously drawing fire from conservatives who argue he has softened aspects of DHS operations following several high-profile ICE shootings and controversies.

For now, President Trump appears to be standing behind his Homeland Security secretary—even if parts of his own movement aren’t.
