A California man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he spent time monitoring security preparations at President Donald Trump’s Southern California golf club before the president’s scheduled visit—and investigators later uncovered what they describe as a significant cache of weapons at his home.
Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from his arrest outside Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes.
According to investigators, the case began Sunday when plainclothes federal agents observed Taele walking the golf course grounds, photographing and filming security operations as preparations were underway for Trump’s Tuesday fundraising appearance. Authorities said Taele was wearing an earpiece and appeared to be paying particular attention to protective measures surrounding the property.
When Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies contacted him, they allegedly discovered a loaded 16-round magazine containing hollow-point ammunition in his pocket.
A subsequent search of his vehicle turned up a loaded 9mm pistol with a round in the chamber, another loaded magazine, binoculars and what authorities described as a fake “security protection agent” badge. Taele allegedly told deputies he was working a State Department security assignment, a claim investigators have not substantiated.
The investigation expanded quickly.
After obtaining a search warrant for Taele’s Downey residence, detectives recovered what officials described as an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk quantities of rifle and pistol ammunition, radio communication equipment and notebooks containing what investigators called “concerning statements.” Authorities have not publicly disclosed the contents of those writings.
Taele now faces several state firearms charges, including possession of prohibited weapons, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a large-capacity magazine. Prosecutors also revealed he is separately facing a robbery charge connected to an unrelated 2025 investigation. Bail was set at $250,000, and a judge ordered him not to possess firearms, stay away from Trump National Golf Club and remain in California while the case proceeds.
The case has drawn heightened attention because it comes less than two years after two separate assassination attempts targeting President Trump during the 2024 campaign, events that dramatically reshaped presidential security protocols.
While investigators have not publicly described Taele’s alleged conduct as an assassination plot, the Secret Service emphasized that it investigates any activity that could reasonably be viewed as a protective intelligence concern.
“We are grateful to our partners at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Joint Terrorism Task Force for their continued support,” the agency said in a statement.
President Trump briefly addressed the incident Tuesday evening.
“The only thing I get a little solace from is they say only consequential presidents,” Trump told Fox News. “And I am definitely consequential.”
Federal, state and local investigators say additional charges remain possible as the investigation continues.
