Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed endorsed Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday, returning the favor after the Squad member helped promote his successful primary campaign last month.
The timing was no accident. Omar faces Minnesota voters Tuesday after securing the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s endorsement for a fifth consecutive time. Her campaign says she won unanimous backing at the Fifth District convention after her opponent withdrew before balloting began.
El-Sayed’s video praised Omar as a champion of working people and urged voters to send her back to Congress. Omar stood beside him, smiling, rocking repeatedly and wringing her hands as he delivered the endorsement.

Yes, the presentation was strange. It looked less like two political heavyweights joining forces and more like somebody had just asked Omar to explain why the hotel minibar was empty.
The substance, however, was perfectly clear: The Democratic Party’s socialist wing is consolidating power across state lines.
Omar endorsed El-Sayed in July, calling him a fighter against corporate interests and praising his support for government-run health care. El-Sayed returned the compliment by describing Omar as “one of the most courageous and unwavering fighters in Congress right now.”
That alliance carries considerable political baggage.
Both candidates have been fierce critics of Israel, and El-Sayed has refused to cut ties with socialist streamer Hasan Piker despite Piker’s notorious declaration that “America deserved 9/11.” El-Sayed called that comment “dumb,” but left open the possibility of campaigning with Piker again.
Sen. John Fetterman has now dared El-Sayed to keep embracing Piker through the general election, accusing the Michigan nominee of displaying “little man syndrome energy.” El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers in November for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Gary Peters.
Omar, meanwhile, has built a national profile through repeated controversies involving Israel, antisemitic tropes and her attacks on President Trump. Her district’s Republican Party has endorsed Iraqi-born journalist Dalia al-Aqidi to challenge her in November.
