C-SPAN caller unloads over ‘disgusting’ daily Trump-bashing, ‘turning into CNN and The View’

by

A Republican caller gave C-SPAN host Jasmine Wright an earful Wednesday, accusing the network of allowing President Donald Trump to be insulted for hours while its hosts sit silently.

The caller, identified as John from Portland, Connecticut, initially discussed the state’s Tuesday primary elections during C-SPAN’s Washington Journal. He then abruptly turned his attention to what he described as an endless stream of anti-Trump abuse from viewers.

“One thing I want to get back to, Jasmine, before you hang up on me,” John began.

He cited an earlier caller who had labeled Trump an “idiot” and complained that Wright did not challenge the insult.

“Every day on your show for three hours, I hear more denigration of Donald J. Trump than anywhere,” John said. “Again, a gentleman, probably a nice elderly gentleman, just called our president an idiot. And you say nothing.”

“You say nothing all the time,” he continued. “And it’s getting to the point where you guys are out of hand.”

John said C-SPAN’s programming has begun sounding more like openly partisan cable-news and daytime talk shows.

“Someone made a comment last week about your C-SPAN is getting like CNN, MS NOW and The View, because all you people do is insult our president,” he said.

His broadside was briefly interrupted by the delayed sound of his own voice coming from a television in the background. Wright asked him to mute the set, and John resumed without losing any momentum.

He said he had been a Democrat until Hillary Clinton became the party’s presidential nominee in 2016, but now intended to vote Republican for the rest of his life.

“I never did that on air to any president,” John said. “I would never do that to any president.”

“If you don’t like him, keep it to yourself,” he added. “But for you people to every day air that, and the way your callers insult our president—he’s doing the best he can with what he has and what he was left.”

“So all I say is, I’m voting for Republicans until the day I die,” he declared. “I was a Democrat. I voted Democrat up until Hillary Clinton ran for president.”

John closed with a warning about what could happen the next time a Democrat occupies the White House.

“For your callers to every day—three hours of insulting our president and his whole Cabinet and everything else—it’s totally disgusting,” he said. “Totally disgusting.”

“I know someday there’s gonna be a Democratic president in there, and God forbid what happens, because you know what goes around comes around, as they say.”

Wright ended the call and defended the program’s format, noting that Washington Journal provides an open platform for ordinary Americans across the political spectrum.

The person who called Trump an “idiot” was a viewer—not Wright or another C-SPAN employee. The network divides its phone lines among Republicans, Democrats and independents and generally allows callers to state their opinions unless they become threatening, obscene or entirely disconnected from the discussion.

C-SPAN describes Washington Journal as a forum in which lawmakers, journalists and public officials discuss current events while taking questions and comments directly from the public. The three-hour program airs every morning.

John’s frustration nevertheless reflects a broader exhaustion among Trump supporters who believe nearly every national institution applies a separate standard to the president.

Trump has been called a fascist, dictator, idiot, criminal and existential threat across television news, comedy programs and celebrity platforms. Insults directed at Democratic presidents are more frequently treated as evidence of dangerous political hatred, while attacks on Trump are often presented as responsible civic engagement.
