Disney changes its trash cans—and fans react like Mickey just got evicted

There are wars. Elections. Inflation. International crises.

And then there is the matter currently tearing apart the Disney community: They changed the trash cans.

Walt Disney World is gradually replacing its familiar flat-topped garbage cans with new solar-powered “smart” receptacles capable of compacting garbage and notifying workers when they’re full.

Sounds reasonable, right?

Oh, you sweet summer child.

The new cans have curved tops.

Which means Disney has apparently destroyed one of EPCOT’s most cherished unofficial traditions: eating your expensive Disney food off the top of a garbage can.

“Eating on top of a trash can at EPCOT during a festival is basically a rite of passage,” one fan complained on TikTok. “Not glamorous. But PRACTICAL.”

Another asked the question future historians will surely identify as the moment the rebellion began, “where am I supposed to EAT?!

And Reddit is having a field day.

One fan joked that Disney had essentially invented “bird spikes” for humans who gather around garbage cans.

Believe it or not, the trash-can dining culture is real. One Disney regular explained, “If I’m in Epcot I’ll use just about any flat surface to hold my food for a minute,” while another admitted to personally cleaning off a trash-can lid to make room for a plate and drink when tables were unavailable.

Nothing says Most Magical Place on Earth quite like disinfecting the lid of a garbage receptacle before dinner.

To be fair to Disney, the new cans actually do things. They’re designed to compact trash, hold more of it and alert custodial workers when they need attention. They also have foot pedals so guests don’t have to touch the chute with their hands — a feature even some skeptical Disney fans have welcomed.

But Disney underestimated one critical fact: These people love their garbage cans.

There are Disney fans who photograph them. Disney sells miniature versions. Collectors buy retired park trash cans. One Reddit user who spent a vacation photographing Disney cans was met by commenters discussing their favorite models and joking that the pictures constituted an inventory of “new dining room tables.”

So yes, America, we’ve reached the point where replacing a garbage can can trigger nostalgia.

Disney’s pitch is considerably more upbeat: “Same magic. Smarter can.”

Maybe.

But apparently nobody at Imagineering asked the most important question: Can I put my $17 festival snack on it?

Because somewhere in EPCOT right now, a devastated Disney adult is holding a plate in one hand, a drink in the other, staring at a curved garbage-can lid and wondering where it all went wrong.

The Mouse survived streaming wars, culture wars and Florida politics. Now comes the real test. Trash Can-gate.
