Marco Rubio gets hilarious birthday gift from White House – and Trump makes the meme official

WASHINGTON — Marco Rubio has finally received the one government assignment that may be beyond even his capabilities: being 68 people at once.

A hilarious White House birthday present to the secretary of state exploded into public view this week after Axios reporter Marc Caputo revealed a gold-framed collage containing 68 versions of the viral “Rubio realizing” meme — the internet phenomenon that has turned President Donald Trump’s seemingly omnipresent Cabinet official into everything from Robocop to an astronaut to a plumber.

The gift was actually presented to Rubio for his 55th birthday on May 28, but the outside world didn’t get a good look at the masterpiece until this week.

And masterpiece may be the appropriate word.

At the center sits the photograph that started the whole thing: Rubio sunk deeply into an Oval Office couch during Trump’s famously contentious February 2025 meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump signed that original image in gold ink with a presidential performance review consisting of four words: “You are great.”

Surrounding it are 67 alternate-universe Marcos.

 

The meme works because the real joke is already half true. The internet didn’t randomly decide Rubio should have every job in America. Trump has been doing his part to make the joke believable.

Rubio is secretary of state and acting national security adviser. He previously served simultaneously as acting administrator of USAID and acting archivist of the United States. More recently, he even filled in at the White House briefing-room podium while Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was on maternity leave.

In other words, every time Washington produces a vacancy, the internet has developed a simple solution:

Give it to Marco.

The joke received another enormous boost in May when White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted video of Rubio actually working the DJ booth at a family wedding.

Yes, really. Scavino introduced the clip by declaring that the secretary of state “DJ’s weddings too!” Rubio appeared wearing headphones behind the equipment, pumping his fist along with the music.

At that point, the meme writers barely had to work anymore.

Perhaps the funniest part is that Rubio wasn’t exactly delighted with the photograph that started all of this.

“The meme thing, you know, was interesting, ’cause when it first came out, I hated that picture,” Rubio recently told Lara Trump.

And he has an explanation for why he looked as though he’d just been informed that he had been appointed secretary of state, national security adviser, White House janitor and manager of the Washington Nationals simultaneously.

Blame the couch. “If you don’t have a pillow behind your back, you kinda sink,” Rubio explained.

Eventually, however, resistance became futile. “And then it turned into this other thing, and it was fine,” Rubio said. “And it’s funny.”

Rubio also revealed that Scavino had already immortalized the phenomenon. “Dan Scavino made a nice board for me,” Rubio said.

But there was a problem. “Even since he made that board, we had to update it.”

Of course they did.

There is actually something more interesting happening beneath the joke. Rubio’s willingness to laugh along with the meme has helped turn what easily could have become an embarrassing photograph into a remarkably effective piece of political branding.

The original picture doesn’t exactly scream commanding statesman. Rubio is slouched down, hands clasped, looking as though someone has just informed him that his flight was canceled and the next one leaves Thursday.

But the internet transformed that expression into something else, the exhausted face of the guy who has just discovered Trump gave him another job. And because Rubio really has accumulated an extraordinary portfolio inside the administration, the gag reinforces an image that most politicians would pay consultants millions of dollars to manufacture: Marco Rubio is the guy Trump calls when something needs doing.

Axios noted that the meme phenomenon has helped boost Rubio’s public profile, while Trump himself has repeatedly praised his performance. Earlier this year, the president went so far as to predict Rubio could “go down as the greatest secretary of state in history.”

That’s quite a journey for a meme born from one badly positioned couch cushion.

MY QUICK TAKE:

Politics used to have a rule: Never let your opponents turn you into a joke. The internet changed that rule. Now the trick is making sure you’re in on the joke.

Marco Rubio figured that out.

He could have spent the last year getting irritated every time somebody Photoshopped him into another job. Instead, he laughed. The White House laughed. Trump laughed. And now the president has literally signed the meme and put it in a gold frame. That’s how you beat the internet. At this rate, somewhere inside the West Wing there is probably an emergency binder labeled: BREAK GLASS — CALL RUBIO.
