President Donald Trump found himself standing before a room full of New York law enforcement officers Friday with an almost tailor-made example of just how far left the city’s Democratic politics have traveled.
Her name is Darializa Avila Chevalier — the Democratic Socialist congressional nominee backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani who stunned the Democratic establishment in June by knocking off five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th District. Her victory was one of three congressional primary wins by Mamdani-backed candidates and another sign of the DSA’s growing clout inside New York’s Democratic Party.
Trump’s reaction upon mentioning her Friday? “Who the hell is she?” That drew boos from the law-enforcement crowd before Trump explained why he was bringing her up.
“She called police pigs,” Trump said. “‘They’re pigs.’ She said, ‘They’re pigs!’”
This wasn’t simply Trump riffing.
CNN’s KFile previously uncovered deleted posts from Avila Chevalier’s old social-media account. In one, she responded to a discussion about finding a better slogan than “defund the police” by declaring: “We’re going to defund and abolish. You don’t get to water down our movements.” Other recovered posts included her describing abolition as “ending policing full stop.”
Avila Chevalier has said she has “grown considerably” since those posts. But additional deleted material uncovered after her primary victory included favorable references to communism, Marxism and authoritarian communist figures. Asked about Trump’s attacks on her politics, she said she had intentionally chosen not to be “reactive.”
Trump wasn’t feeling nearly so restrained Friday.
“That’s her campaign. That’s what she says — ‘End policing full stop,’” he told the crowd while arguing that the ascendant socialist wing of the Democratic Party favors “abolishing the police, abolishing prisons, abolishing qualified immunity” and abolishing immigration enforcement.
And Avila Chevalier isn’t some fringe activist Democrats managed to keep off the ballot. She’s their congressional nominee after defeating an incumbent, with the backing of Mamdani and the DSA. Reuters described her upset as part of Mamdani’s effort to push New York Democrats further toward democratic socialism.
So when Trump asked, “Who the hell is she?” there was actually a pretty important answer. She’s somebody New York Democrats just nominated for Congress.
