Well, here’s one relationship in Trump-world that won’t be patched up over cocktails. Rudy Giuliani is threatening to sue Tucker Carlson over Carlson’s recent interview with Hunter Biden, accusing both men of defaming him while revisiting the infamous Hunter Biden laptop saga.
Giuliani erupted during a Newsmax appearance after the conversation turned to Hunter Biden. Rudy quickly zeroed in on Carlson’s August 10 interview with the former president’s son. “He personally defamed me, Hunter Biden did. And so did Tucker and I’m seriously considering suing him,” Giuliani said.
And then Rudy really got warmed up.
He accused Carlson of treating Hunter with kid gloves — describing the interview as Tucker virtually having Hunter “on his lap, feeding him a bottle” — before blasting Carlson for appearing to agree with Hunter’s version of how the laptop material emerged.
“He can go to hell!” Giuliani declared.
The underlying exchange between Carlson and Hunter is worth examining because it was extraordinary in its own right.
Carlson told Hunter that he had always believed the laptop itself was real but questioned the accepted story of how its contents entered the media bloodstream. Carlson said people connected to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approached him while he was at Fox News with material allegedly connected to Hunter.
Hunter then offered his own sprawling theory involving Giuliani, Ukraine, Russia and Israel, claiming Giuliani had been seeking material about him before the Delaware computer repair shop became part of the story. Carlson didn’t exactly respond by pounding the table in Rudy’s defense.
At one point, after Hunter questioned whether he ever dropped off a laptop at John Paul Mac Isaac’s repair shop, Carlson said the repair-shop account had always been “the weak part of the story.” That apparently didn’t sit particularly well with America’s Mayor.
There’s also a bit of history here: Tucker and Rudy used to be on the same side of this fight. Giuliani appeared on Carlson’s Fox News program to defend his investigation of the Biden family, while Carlson himself spent years hammering Hunter Biden and the media establishment’s handling of the laptop story.
Now Hunter Biden sits down with Tucker Carlson, Tucker questions pieces of the laptop narrative, and Rudy is talking about taking Tucker to court. Only in politics can yesterday’s friendly cable-news interview become tomorrow’s Exhibit A.
The only thing missing is Judge Judy walking in and saying, “Everybody shut up. I watched the interview.”
