Country superstar Jelly Roll apparently isn’t worried about losing some Trump-supporting fans.

In fact, he’s now telling them they can go right ahead and stop listening. The singer has spent the week guest-hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and repeatedly hammering President Donald Trump — prompting Florida Republican Rep. Jimmy Patronis to unload on him Wednesday.

“Jelly Roll is 100% not welcomed to Florida’s panhandle,” Patronis wrote on X. “I don’t even want to see his bus on I-10.”

Then came the flamethrower.

“He’s always been the token ‘country’ star the libs in California are allowed to enjoy. (He ain’t country, never was.) Take the TDS elsewhere, loser.”

Jelly Roll — whose real name is Jason DeFord — set off the firestorm Monday after using his Kimmel monologue to take repeated shots at Trump.

Discussing his own dramatic 300-pound weight loss, Jelly Roll joked that he’d “lost an entire Donald Trump.” He also called himself and the president “fat pigs” before delivering a crude punchline about Trump’s anatomy. But the joke that probably raised the most eyebrows among conservative fans involved race.

Discussing Trump’s appearance at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, Jelly Roll joked that the president enjoyed the race because “normally he only likes his own race.”

Patronis wasn’t alone in noticing.

The monologue surprised some fans precisely because Jelly Roll has generally avoided attaching himself to either political party. During congressional testimony in 2024, he explicitly said he had “no political alliance” and was “neither Democrat nor Republican.”

But by Tuesday night, Jelly Roll knew he’d kicked a hornet’s nest. “I did a couple of jokes like that last night in case y’all didn’t hear about it,” he told the Kimmel audience. “And it’s because I’m hosting a damn late night show. That’s where you talk about the news and you make jokes.”

He said he was astonished that making Trump jokes had become the latest surprising chapter of a life that already included being a felon and drug dealer, losing 300 pounds and becoming a Grammy-winning star. Then he made clear he wasn’t retreating. Jelly Roll argued that any American president ought to be able to take a few jokes and addressed fans threatening to boycott his music. “I just want to say with conviction, go right ahead,” he said, adding that he intended to keep speaking his mind.

And he kept his word.

On Wednesday night’s Kimmel show, Jelly Roll went after Trump again while discussing the president’s trade battle with Canada — and also responded directly to criticism from Fox News and Jesse Watters.

There’s also an amusing twist in Patronis’ declaration that Jelly Roll isn’t welcome in his part of Florida. Before this controversy, Patronis apparently had a rather different opinion of the singer. A 2024 social-media post resurfaced showing Patronis publicly inviting Jelly Roll to Gulf Coast Jam: “How bout it @JellyRoll615? Welcome to @GulfCoastJam!”

That was then. A few Trump jokes later, apparently the welcome mat has been rolled up.

MY QUICK TAKE:

Jelly Roll is absolutely entitled to tell Trump jokes.

And his audience is absolutely entitled to decide whether they still want to buy tickets, stream his songs and help finance the next mansion. That’s the beauty of the arrangement.

But I do find one thing fascinating. Of all the directions a supposedly apolitical country superstar could take when handed Jimmy Kimmel’s desk, he somehow discovered the same comedy formula Hollywood has been serving America for roughly a decade: Trump is fat. Trump is racist. Trump is stupid.

Edgy!

And when some of the people who helped make him a superstar didn’t particularly appreciate it? “Go right ahead” and stop listening. Be careful what you wish for, Jelly.
