Bill Maher unloads on liberal guest’s ‘dumb’ Trump-Iran talking point

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • Molly Jong-Fast claimed Trump went to war with Iran without explaining why.
  • Bill Maher immediately cut her off: “It’s such a dumb talking point.”
  • Maher said Trump’s rationale was obvious — stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

Bill Maher wasn’t buying what Molly Jong-Fast was selling.

The liberal host of HBO’s “Real Time” abruptly turned on Jong-Fast Friday night when she claimed President Donald Trump went to war with Iran while “never explaining to us why.”

“He did explain it, please,” Maher interjected as the audience applauded Jong-Fast. “It’s such a dumb talking point. He did explain it,” Maher said.

Jong-Fast challenged him: “Okay, so why?”

“To stop them from getting nuclear weapons,” Maher answered, adding that Iran had also been a “terrible actor in the Middle East.”

The exchange began as Republican Florida gubernatorial nominee Rep. Byron Donalds argued that allowing Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon made no geopolitical sense. Maher jumped in to remind the panel that opposition to a nuclear-armed Iran was hardly some new Trump invention.

“Even the Democrats said it for years,” he said.

Jong-Fast then argued that the Strait of Hormuz had been open before the war and accused Trump of failing to explain his justification for attacking Iran. That was apparently one talking point too many for Maher.

Jong-Fast also called the conflict an “unwinnable war.” Maher disagreed with that claim as well — although he certainly didn’t give Trump a blank check. Maher argued that Trump botched the timing by waiting until after Iran’s mass uprising had been brutally suppressed before launching the attack.

“They should have attacked when the people were in the streets during the uprising,” Maher said.

MY QUICK TAKE

When Bill Maher has to stop a liberal panelist and explain Trump’s position to her, you know the talking point has wandered pretty far off the reservation.

Maher didn’t say Trump was right about everything. He simply committed the increasingly radical act of remembering what Trump actually said.
