Letitia James has spent years hearing Donald Trump accuse her of weaponizing her office against him.
Now the accusation is coming from inside the building.
Assistant Attorney General Daniel Wiesenfeld, a veteran prosecutor working in James’ Investor Protection Bureau, sent an extraordinary email Friday alleging that his boss had directed him “to find and pursue crimes committed by specific individuals and organizations affiliated with Donald Trump.”
And he named names.
According to the Times Union, Wiesenfeld said Bureau Chief Shamiso Maswoswe instructed him to target Trump himself, Truth Social and Hewlett Packard “without having a credible reason for targeting the organizations and individuals.”
Prosecutors are supposed to investigate evidence of a crime and follow it wherever it leads — not pick the person first and go hunting for the crime afterward.
Wiesenfeld made essentially that argument himself.
“If you believe Trump is using the [Department of Justice] attorneys to prosecute his enemies and further his political interests, you should find it equally troubling that Tish [James] is doing exactly the same thing,” he wrote, according to the Times Union.
Then came the line James probably wishes had never left his keyboard: “I ask you that you not serve as Tish’s personal attorneys by targeting her political enemies.”
This wasn’t a private gripe sent to one coworker. The message reportedly went to roughly 2,000 employees of the attorney general’s office.
And then it disappeared.
The Times Union reports that the email was quickly deleted from the office’s computer servers. General Counsel Kumiki Gibson subsequently sent employees a message describing the situation as an internal matter. Wiesenfeld was later placed on paid administrative leave.
James’ office strongly rejects his allegations. “This is a personnel matter,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “The Office of the Attorney General is committed to upholding New York’s laws and protecting the rights and freedoms of all New Yorkers, regardless of political beliefs. We strongly reject any assertion to the contrary.”
But Wiesenfeld wasn’t finished. He accused the office of spending “significant public taxpayer dollars to target convenient public enemies” while arguing that prosecutors should instead be going after crimes including nonprofit homeless-shelter fraud and antisemitic offenses around synagogues.
And there’s no escaping the history hanging over this accusation. James campaigned for attorney general in 2018 while openly promising to pursue Trump. Her office ultimately brought the massive civil fraud case against him and his business empire.
Trump has spent years arguing that James started with the man and went looking for the crime. Now one of her own prosecutors is publicly accusing her office of doing precisely that.
