Maxine Waters blames ‘white media’ for making Democrats fight with socialists

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • Rep. Maxine Waters says the growing conflict between establishment Democrats and the Democratic Socialists of America is being encouraged by the “white media.”
  • Waters insisted Democrats and socialists aren’t as far apart as reporters suggest and said both sides should instead concentrate on defeating Republicans.
  • There’s just one awkward detail: the divisions are very real — and an internal NYC-DSA demographic report says 60% of members responding to its survey identify as white.

Good news, Democrats.

Maxine Waters has figured out who’s causing all that fighting between your party establishment and the socialist insurgents trying to overthrow it.

White people.

More specifically:

“White media.”

CNN’s Dana Bash asked the California Democrat Sunday about the increasingly obvious conflict between establishment Democrats and the Democratic Socialists of America.

Waters wasn’t buying the premise.

“I don’t believe that we have to have this conflict,” Waters said on “State of the Union.”

Then she identified who she believes is encouraging it.

“I think it’s the media, particularly the white media, that would like to see the conflict and they keep raising it and keep trying to divide us,” Waters said.

Well.

That certainly simplifies things.

Except there really is a fight.

DSA-aligned candidates have spent this primary season knocking off incumbent Democrats and terrifying party moderates worried that Republicans will use the socialist organization’s positions against every Democrat on the ballot.

Former DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison has suggested candidates who dislike the Democratic Party should go somewhere else.

James Carville has openly called for a “schism.”

And Axios reported Sunday night that even the socialists are now fighting among themselves over AOC, the organization’s leadership and how far the movement should go heading toward 2028.

That’s a lot of work for “white media” to fabricate before Labor Day.

Waters nevertheless argued that the two Democratic camps aren’t terribly far apart.

“I don’t think that we are that far apart,” she told Bash, saying Democrats should concentrate on the “basic issues” they share and “stop this business of trying to divide us.”

Her proposed unifying principle was straightforward:

“We all should be focused on getting rid of the Republicans.”

There is one especially entertaining wrinkle in Waters’s racial diagnosis.

The socialist movement she says the “white media” is using to divide Democrats is itself pretty white.

An internal NYC-DSA demographic report obtained by City & State found that 60% of active members who responded to the group’s optional demographic survey identified as white.

Only 9% identified as Black.

The survey isn’t a complete census — about 63% of the chapter’s roughly 15,600 members responded, and members could select more than one racial or ethnic identity — but it still found NYC-DSA considerably whiter than New York City itself.

And the political differences aren’t imaginary either.

The national DSA’s “Workers Deserve More” platform calls for changes including abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court with officials chosen by Congress and allowing permanent residents who aren’t citizens to vote.

Not every DSA-backed candidate embraces those positions — several have explicitly rejected portions of the national platform.

But reporters didn’t write it.

The DSA did.

Meanwhile, the movement keeps winning Democratic primaries.

That’s why establishment Democrats are worried.

That’s why Republicans are delighted.

And that’s why journalists keep asking about it.

Maxine Waters has another explanation.

White media.

MY QUICK TAKE

This is magnificent.

Democratic Socialists are beating establishment Democrats in primaries. Democratic grandees are publicly talking about throwing socialists out of the party. The DSA is fighting with itself over AOC.

And according to Maxine Waters, the problem is the reporters noticing.

Even better, the socialist movement at the center of the supposed “white media” conspiracy is itself overwhelmingly white.

Sometimes the punchline arrives fully assembled.
