Apparently even Dolly Parton’s children’s literacy program isn’t safe from getting drafted into the Middle East debate.
A claim circulating online alleged that Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library had donated books to children in Israel, prompting Snopes to investigate whether the late country music legend’s famous literacy project had quietly entered one of the world’s most politically combustible arenas.
The answer: no.
Snopes found no evidence that Dolly’s Imagination Library donated books or money to Israeli children or Israeli literacy initiatives.
What does exist is a connection of inspiration.
PJ Library, a program that distributes Jewish children’s books to families around the world, was created by philanthropist Harold Grinspoon. Grinspoon has credited Dolly’s Imagination Library with helping inspire the concept behind his own book-gifting program.
That’s a pretty substantial difference between “Dolly inspired an idea” and “Dolly sent books to Israel.”
The two programs are separate organizations, and Snopes found no formal relationship between them.
Parton did publicly praise PJ Library and its work, which may have helped fuel the confusion. But praising another literacy organization isn’t the same thing as funding it, operating it or shipping its books overseas.
And that’s really the strange part of this story.
The Imagination Library has spent decades doing something remarkably uncomplicated: putting books into the hands of young children.
Yet somebody managed to turn even that into an international political controversy.
