That was fast: Netflix already made a documentary about Trump’s wild decoy-plane escape

Netflix has already produced a documentary about the extraordinary July operation that secretly moved President Trump off Air Force One amid a credible Iranian assassination threat.

Hollywood used to wait a few years before turning history into a movie.

Netflix apparently waits until everybody involved has unpacked.

Less than two months after President Donald Trump’s remarkable secret flight out of Turkey — and barely three weeks after the operation became public — Netflix has already made a documentary about it.

Instadocs: The Decoy Plane premieres Friday, Sept. 4.

And if you somehow missed the original story, Netflix barely needs to embellish it.

There was an assassination threat. Air Force One. A secret military aircraft. A plane full of reporters being used as a decoy. And, because apparently someone decided the story wasn’t sufficiently cinematic already, Trump escaped in an airport catering truck.

The extraordinary operation unfolded July 8 as Trump was leaving a NATO summit in Turkey amid what officials believed was a credible Iran-linked threat against the president or his aircraft.

Trump publicly boarded the familiar blue-and-white Air Force One.

Then came the switcheroo. According to reporting first published by The Washington Post, Trump and several aides secretly left the aircraft through another door and climbed into an elevated catering truck. The truck carried them to a waiting Air Force C-32A — a modified Boeing 757 — which then flew Trump out of Turkey using the unremarkable call sign “Reach 18.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth traveled with Trump aboard the secret flight.

Meanwhile, the regular Air Force One took off carrying journalists, White House aides and other officials.

No president. The people aboard didn’t know it. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were also aboard the decoy aircraft, although CBS News later reported that both knew Trump was traveling separately.

Trump subsequently said the elaborate switch was ordered by the Secret Service and military. “I just follow what they’d like to do,” Trump told reporters in August. “So I go by Secret Service and the military. They wanted me to go on a different flight, a different plane.”

Netflix clearly decided this was too good to leave sitting in the news archives.

The documentary is part of the streamer’s new Instadocs franchise, which Netflix describes as a quick-turn documentary series designed to move “at the speed of the story.”

They aren’t kidding. The Washington Post broke the full story Aug. 10. Netflix’s documentary premieres Sept. 4. That’s 25 days.

The film includes firsthand accounts from Reuters White House reporter Gram Slattery and Associated Press photographer Alex Brandon, along with Washington Post reporter Dan Lamothe, former Secret Service agent Robert McDonald and former Air Force One crew member Wanda Joell.

It also features former Washington Post journalist Carol Leonnig, now with MS NOW. Netflix says the documentary will examine both the extraordinary security operation and what it meant for the journalists who were unknowingly sent flying off without the president they were supposed to be covering. The entire episode demonstrated just how far presidential security officials were prepared to go in response to a credible threat.

It also produced one of those stories that would be rejected by a Hollywood screenwriter for being a little too ridiculous.

All that’s missing is Liam Neeson driving the catering truck.
