A CNN discussion over the death of a young Haitian immigrant descended into shouting Tuesday night after conservative commentator Brianna Lyman questioned whether immigration enforcement was responsible for the tragedy.
Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Wright State University student, died Monday after walking into traffic on Interstate 70 in Ohio. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, while his family believes he took his own life after becoming distraught over wearing a federal GPS ankle monitor and facing possible deportation.
Bel had written publicly about the “shame and humiliation” he felt wearing the monitor. His family said it also interfered with his ability to play college soccer.
During CNN’s “NewsNight,” host Abby Phillip presented the family’s account before Lyman, a reporter for The Federalist, pushed back.
“There’s no proof that this suicide was because of his ankle monitor,” Lyman said.
She then noted that Bel walked into interstate traffic and asked whether he could have caused an accident involving American motorists.
“So you’re blaming the dude that’s not here?” former ESPN personality Jemele Hill shot back as several panelists began talking over one another.
Phillip emphasized that Bel’s family believed his treatment contributed to his death and described the humiliation a 20-year-old might experience from wearing an ankle monitor.
“It’s not humiliation; we have a right to enforce our laws,” Lyman responded.
“He could have voluntarily left,” she added.
When Phillip again clarified that she was describing the family’s belief, Lyman stressed that a belief was “not the same as confirmation.”
“Do you hear your voice?” progressive commentator Leigh McGowan asked. “You sound like an automaton,” McGowan continued. “This is a person’s life.”
Lyman replied that no suicide note had been discovered and later told McGowan, “You should smile more. You’re very angry.”
Phillip eventually ended the exchange after arguing that crimes committed by some illegal immigrants did not make every immigrant collectively responsible.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called Bel’s death a “horrible, horrible tragedy” and questioned whether deporting young immigrants like him was something Americans wanted done in their name.
Bel had recently graduated from high school, participated in Junior ROTC and begun classes at Wright State. The university described him as an active honors student who was passionate about soccer.
MY QUICK TAKE
Brianna Lyman was 100% right. A family’s grief and belief deserve compassion, but they are not proof—and neither tragedy nor emotion suspends America’s right to enforce its immigration laws. The panel attacked Lyman’s tone because it could not refute her central point.
