He finally went there …Trump wants to put his name on the Strait of Hormuz

President Trump floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait” after claiming the United States now controls the vital waterway.
Trump predicted the rebranded strait would be “hotter than ever before.”
The suggestion follows his official U.S. renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.

President Donald Trump is considering another change to the world map—this time with his own name attached. Trump floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait” in a Truth Social post Wednesday, claiming the United States had taken control of the strategically vital waterway.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote.

“Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” he added. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

The president did not announce an executive order or any formal process to pursue the proposed change.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is one of the most important oil-shipping routes in the world, making control of the narrow passage a major economic and military issue. Trump’s proposal comes amid renewed fighting between the United States and Iran, including American strikes on Iranian military targets and retaliatory Iranian attacks against U.S. forces in the Middle East.

The president has claimed that the United States now controls the strait, although Iran remains positioned along its northern coast and continues to threaten vessels operating in the region.

“Trump Strait” would be the latest entry in the president’s growing campaign to rewrite geographical labels. Trump previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” for official federal use and restored Alaska’s Denali to its former federal name, Mount McKinley. Last week, he signed an executive order directing the federal government to call Lake Ontario “Lake America” amid his escalating trade dispute with Canada.

Google Maps subsequently adopted “Lake America” for users in the United States while continuing to show “Lake Ontario” in Canada. Trump has also suggested that the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean could be next.

International waterways present a far greater challenge than locations within U.S. territory. Washington can determine the terminology used by federal agencies, but it cannot compel other countries, international organizations or private mapmakers to adopt “Trump Strait.”

For now, the proposal remains a Truth Social suggestion—and another warning to cartographers that no body of water is completely safe.
