BO’s WEEKEND WRAP: Ladies, please don’t kill the men

by

LISTEN HERE

Three hours. More insight. More laughs. More music.

Saturday mornings are where we have time to go beyond the headlines. It’s three hours of news, lively conversation, thought-provoking guests, your phone calls, and, of course, some great music mixed in along the way. We connect the dots, challenge the conventional wisdom, and explore the stories shaping our country with a little more depth—and a lot more fun—than the weekday clock allows.

SATURDAY MORNING EXTRAVAGANZA: Good news: America has figured out what a man is again

I have some encouraging news from the Saturday Morning Extravaganza.

After years of national confusion, arguments, seminars and people insisting the question was somehow impossible to answer, America has apparently rediscovered the definition of a man.

All it took was one male juror.

The Lindsay Clancy trial ended in a mistrial, and the lone holdout was reportedly a man. I’m not going to spend another column litigating the Clancy case. We’ve been talking about it all week, and if prosecutors retry her, we’ll certainly be talking about it again.

What caught my attention Saturday was what happened around it.

The Countess of Conspiracy pointed out something I hadn’t considered. Some people who have spent years telling us that identifying a man can be an extraordinarily complicated matter suddenly had absolutely no difficulty.

There he is!

THE MAN!

Apparently, the scientific breakthrough occurred somewhere inside that Massachusetts jury room.

And once he was identified, some women on social media were ready for war. Literally.

One woman announced that if she could push a button and kill all men, she would do it. She acknowledged that a few “good men” would be lost, but explained that sacrifices have to be made in war.

Another proposed that if she became president, women should be permitted to kill one man every year without consequences.

This seems somewhat more ambitious than the usual first 100-day agenda.

She even argued that this would reduce crime, corruption and greed, allowing everybody left to “coexist in peace.”

Nothing says peaceful coexistence quite like an annual government-sanctioned man hunt.

And this is where the whole thing becomes bigger than Lindsay Clancy.

There is something deeply unhealthy happening in the way men and women increasingly talk about each other. Social media takes every grievance, every bad relationship, every political disagreement and every horrible individual case and turns it into an indictment of half the human race.

Men don’t merely disagree with you. Men hate women.

Women don’t merely disagree with you. Women hate men.

Your husband isn’t just wrong. He’s evidence of the patriarchy.

Your ex-girlfriend isn’t just crazy. She’s proof that women are crazy.

Everybody gets drafted into somebody else’s gender war.

I have no interest in enlisting.

Which may explain why the musical interruptions Saturday felt particularly welcome.

One minute we’re hearing somebody advocate eliminating men; the next Kevin and I are talking about that unmistakable bass line in Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side,” the Stones’ “Miss You,” or how Eric Clapton ended up playing lead guitar on the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

At one point Lindsay Clancy’s own attorney said she had turned him on to Rascal Flatts.

“Rascal Flatts, what?”

Apparently even I can still discover music.

Then we wandered into George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd — one of the most famous romantic triangles in rock history. Clapton fell in love with Harrison’s wife, wrote “Layla” about her and eventually married her.

Somehow Harrison and Clapton remained friends.

Think about that.

Those two managed to survive that, while people who’ve never met each other are on social media declaring war on all men because of one juror in Massachusetts.

Maybe rock stars were better adjusted than we thought.

The Clancy case will continue. There are serious questions surrounding it, and there are three children at the center of it who should never disappear beneath all the politics and cultural warfare.

But Saturday reminded me how quickly one terrible case can become ammunition for something much larger and uglier.

So I’m sitting this gender war out.

America has apparently figured out what a man is again.

Now if we can just convince everybody not to kill him.

Put on a record instead.
