BS BULLETIN:
- A previously deported Mexican national is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after a crash that killed 23-year-old Ohio teacher Cameron Lyon.
- DHS says Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez was deported in 2020, later illegally re-entered the United States and was allegedly driving under the influence when the deadly crash occurred.
- Lyon’s 23-year-old fiancée, Abrielle Kerns, was seriously injured and remained in intensive care, according to her family.
A 23-year-old Ohio teacher who had recently become engaged was killed in a fiery crash allegedly caused by a previously deported illegal immigrant who authorities say was driving drunk.
Cameron Lyon was killed Sunday evening on U.S. Route 33 in Fairfield County. His fiancée, 23-year-old Abrielle Kerns, was seriously injured in the crash and was still fighting to recover in intensive care, according to her family.
Police arrested 33-year-old Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, a Mexican national, following the crash.
According to authorities, Uribe-Gonzalez was traveling east when his SUV went off the roadway. He allegedly overcorrected, crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with the vehicle carrying Lyon and Kerns.
Uribe-Gonzalez has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence and operating a vehicle without a valid license. The charges are allegations, and he has not been convicted.
But his immigration history is what is now drawing national attention.
DHS says Uribe-Gonzalez illegally entered the United States through Texas in January 2020 and was apprehended by Border Patrol. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal that same month, and he was deported in April 2020.
Federal authorities say he subsequently illegally re-entered the United States at an unknown date and location. ICE has now lodged an immigration detainer requesting that Ohio authorities not release him from custody.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Lyon “had his whole life ahead of him” and argued that Uribe-Gonzalez should never have been back in the country.
Lyon taught fifth- and sixth-grade students at Crestline Exempted Village Schools. His mother described him as funny and someone who loved being surrounded by friends.
He and Kerns had been preparing to build a life together.
Instead, one is dead, the other is recovering from devastating injuries — and federal officials are now explaining how the man accused of causing the crash had already been removed from the United States once before.
