‘Morning Joe’ crew joins hands to pray for Tim Scott after fiery convention speech: ‘Bring him back in, Lord’

Sen. Tim Scott gave a barnburner of a convention speech Wednesday night.

By Thursday morning, the crew at “Morning Joe” was holding hands and praying for him.

The unusual television moment came after MS NOW host Joe Scarborough played clips of Scott’s animated address to the Republican midterm convention in Dallas.

Scott, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, used his speech to portray November’s elections as a battle over the country’s identity and described the Democratic field as among the most “dangerous, radical” and “weird” candidates in American history.

He particularly targeted Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico over past comments about God and gender.

But it was Scott’s theatrical warning about Democrats and American culture that really caught Scarborough’s attention.

Scott pulled open his jacket, pounded his chest and acted out the image of the nation’s heart being ripped away as he told the Dallas crowd that Democrats “hate our culture” and “hate what it means to be American.”

“Not! On! Our! Watch!” Scott shouted.

Scarborough wasn’t impressed.

“Speaking of weird, that was really weird,” he said Thursday morning before telling Scott through the camera that the panel was “really worried” about him.

Then Scarborough turned to Sharpton and asked what he thought Scott was doing.

“Well, first we should all join hands and pray for him,” Sharpton replied.

Scarborough decided to take him literally.

He instructed the panelists around the table to join hands and invited Sharpton to lead the prayer.

“Bring him back in, Lord,” Sharpton concluded.

Scarborough followed with his own “Thank you, baby Jesus” as the table broke up laughing. Sharpton then insisted that, despite the joking atmosphere, he was “actually praying.”

Sharpton went on to accuse Scott of going “off the chain” and suggested his performance amounted to an extraordinary effort to demonstrate his loyalty to Trump.

Scott’s speech attracted plenty of attention elsewhere as well. Critics on social media compared the performance to an “SNL cold open,” while former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz simply observed that Scott was definitely not “low-keying it.”

Whatever viewers thought of the delivery, Scott’s underlying message wasn’t subtle.

Republicans, he argued, are fighting to preserve their congressional majority against Democratic candidates whom he views as far outside the American mainstream.

And the speech certainly succeeded at getting attention.

It even got “Morning Joe” to pray.

Tim Scott may have been dramatic Wednesday night.

But by Thursday morning, “Morning Joe” had apparently decided the only reasonable response was an intervention with the Almighty.
