Robert F. Kennedy Jr. walked onto the stage at the Republican midterm convention Thursday night carrying one of the most famous Democratic names in American history.

Then he used it against the Democratic Party.

The Health and Human Services secretary delivered a remarkable rebuke of his former political home in Dallas, arguing that the party synonymous with the Kennedy family has abandoned the principles his father and uncle once represented.

“Neither my father nor my uncle would recognize the Democratic Party of today,” Kennedy told the Republican crowd.

It’s a striking declaration coming from a man who said he began attending Democratic conventions when he was just six years old and later spoke at many of them himself.

Kennedy singled out the party’s handling of the COVID era as one example of that transformation.

“The party of ‘my body, my choice’ forced citizens to wear masks and to submit to invasive and intrusive medical interventions against their own wills,” Kennedy said.

But he didn’t stop there.

Kennedy’s broader argument was that today’s Democratic Party has moved away from traditional liberal principles involving free speech, individual rights and skepticism of powerful institutions while embracing positions on immigration, women’s sports and corporate influence that he says would have been foreign to the party of his family.

Kennedy’s political journey has been almost as extraordinary as the speech itself.

He initially challenged Joe Biden for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination before leaving the party and launching an independent presidential campaign.

He eventually suspended that campaign, endorsed Donald Trump and joined forces with the Republican nominee.

Trump later tapped Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, where Kennedy became the administration’s most prominent voice behind the “Make America Healthy Again” movement.

Kennedy also credited the late Charlie Kirk with helping bring him and Trump together politically.

That made Thursday night’s setting particularly symbolic.

A Kennedy wasn’t standing before Democrats urging them to return to the party’s roots.

He was standing before thousands of Republicans explaining why he believes the party bearing his family’s political legacy left those roots behind.

There are political party switches.

And then there’s a Kennedy standing at a Republican convention telling Democrats that JFK wouldn’t recognize them anymore.

That’s not exactly changing your voter registration at the DMV.

For generations, Democrats practically treated the Kennedy name as political royalty. JFK portraits hung on walls. RFK was a liberal icon. Camelot became part of Democratic mythology.

Now RFK Jr. is on Trump’s team, speaking to Republicans and essentially telling his family’s old party: You didn’t lose me. You lost the plot.

Democrats can dismiss Kennedy all they want. But watching a Kennedy make that argument from the stage of a Republican convention has to sting just a little.

Maybe more than a little.
