Trump responds to Lindsay Clancy pardon plea

President Donald Trump has responded to Lindsay Clancy’s attorney after his unusual public appeal for presidential help.

And Trump appears to be staying out of it.

Clancy attorney Kevin Reddington appealed directly to Trump last week following the mistrial in the Massachusetts mother’s murder case.

“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady,” Reddington said while asking Trump to consider a pardon.

There was an immediate legal problem: a president’s pardon authority applies to federal offenses. Clancy faces Massachusetts state charges in the deaths of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months.

Reddington acknowledged that limitation in a subsequent interview but suggested Trump might instead use his political influence with Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.

Trump was asked Sunday whether he would do that. “I appreciate that he feels that way, and he’s a good attorney,” Trump said. “I hope they can work it out.”

But Trump emphasized that the matter belongs in Massachusetts. “There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead,” Trump said. “It’s actually a state situation, you know, not a federal.”

Trump had previously said Clancy would ultimately pay “a price,” predicting the result would be “a mental institution or jail or something.”

The next major step comes Sept. 29, when the parties are scheduled to return to court following the mistrial. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will retry Clancy.
