Texas Democrat apologizes for honoring Chris Brown with Jasmine Crockett — then Brown fires back

Texas state Rep. Venton Jones is apologizing for his role in honoring Chris Brown alongside Democratic Jasmine Crockett — and Brown isn’t exactly accepting the apology.

Jones appeared Tuesday on “The Don Lemon Show” following criticism over the lawmakers’ appearance with Brown at AT&T Stadium in Arlington over the weekend.

“I want to offer an apology,” Jones said.

Jones specifically addressed women and victims of domestic violence.

“I want to offer my apology to Black women, to women and to anyone who has experienced domestic violence,” Jones said, adding that it was not his intention “to stoke the traumas” surrounding domestic violence.

Jones and Crockett appeared onstage Saturday during Brown and Usher’s tour stop. Jones presented Brown with a Texas state resolution recognizing his achievements in music and entertainment, while Crockett celebrated Brown’s cultural contributions and recognition in the Congressional Record.

“We are experiencing Black joy at the highest level,” Crockett told the crowd.

The honors prompted criticism because Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault after attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 and has faced other legal controversies since.

Jones told Lemon that he and Crockett had also been at the concert as part of an effort to reach and mobilize voters ahead of November’s midterm elections.

But the story took another turn after Jones apologized.

Brown responded by saying he did not want the Texas recognition anymore and criticized Jones for backing away from it following the backlash.

Crockett, meanwhile, had already received a message of support from Brown. He thanked her for the recognition and apologized for the criticism directed at her because of it.
