Mouthy actor Michael Rapaport has had enough of Mamdani — now he says he may do something about it himself

Michael Rapaport has spent months unloading on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Now he may have identified a replacement. Michael Rapaport.

The actor and comedian appeared Sunday at an anti-Mamdani rally outside Gracie Mansion, where demonstrators called for the Democratic socialist mayor to be removed from office.

Rapaport grabbed the microphone and delivered a characteristically understated assessment.

“This guy has got to go,” he told the crowd. Rapaport accused Mamdani of dividing New Yorkers and argued that the mayor’s policies were hurting the city.

“He has done nothing but separate us,” Rapaport said. Then someone in the crowd offered an alternative.

“Rapaport for mayor!” That apparently got him thinking.

“Listen, listen,” Rapaport responded. “I’m not saying I’m running for mayor, but I’m not saying I’m not running for mayor.”

He added: “You never know.”

The crowd broke into chants of “Rapaport for mayor.”

Rapaport has become one of Mamdani’s loudest celebrity critics, particularly over the mayor’s positions involving Israel and the city’s Jewish community. The actor, who is Jewish, campaigned aggressively against Mamdani during the 2025 mayoral race and has continued attacking him since he took office.

Sunday’s demonstration was organized by activists seeking Mamdani’s removal and included protesters carrying signs accusing the mayor of antisemitism and failing New Yorkers. Rapaport argued that Mamdani has failed to live up to his promises of affordability.

“This is not affordable,” he said of the city.

He also took aim at Mamdani’s socialist politics. “Socialism doesn’t work,” Rapaport told the crowd. “It’s never worked.”

Mamdani has rejected accusations of antisemitism and has said criticism of the Israeli government should not be equated with hostility toward Jewish people. He has also repeatedly pledged to protect Jewish New Yorkers from antisemitic violence and harassment.

Rapaport’s appearance came at a particularly interesting moment.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Gracie Mansion Monday afternoon for his third face-to-face meeting with Mamdani. Trump and Mamdani spent much of the 2025 campaign attacking each other before developing an unexpectedly cordial relationship after Mamdani’s election.

Rapaport, meanwhile, does not appear to have undergone a similar warming period. He told Sunday’s crowd that New Yorkers need to continue protesting Mamdani and his administration.
