Trump and Mamdani are meeting again — but this time Trump’s coming to his house

  • It will be their third face-to-face meeting but the first on Mamdani’s home turf.
  • The unlikely pair have maintained a surprisingly cordial relationship despite major fights over immigration and other policies.

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are getting together again Monday — only this time Mamdani gets home-field advantage.

Trump will visit the Democratic socialist mayor at Gracie Mansion, the official mayoral residence on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, during the president’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

“The meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers,” Mamdani’s office said.

The meeting is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m. and will be closed to the press, according to the mayor’s public schedule.

It will be the third face-to-face meeting between two politicians whose unexpectedly cordial relationship has become one of the stranger political pairings of Trump’s second term.

Mamdani first visited Trump at the White House shortly after his election in November 2025.

That meeting attracted enormous attention because the two had spent the campaign attacking one another.

Trump had called Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic,” while Mamdani had described Trump as a “fascist” and “despot.”

Then they met. And something funny happened. They appeared to like each other.

Trump told reporters after that first meeting that Mamdani could “surprise some conservative people,” and the president even brushed aside the mayor-elect’s previous attacks on him.

Mamdani returned to the White House in February for another meeting, this time focused heavily on housing.

He arrived with a particularly New York-style prop: a mock newspaper front page reading “Trump to City: Let’s Build,” a play on the infamous 1975 “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD” headline.

The message was intended to show Trump the political upside of federal investment in New York housing.

Since then, however, some substantial disagreements have resurfaced. New York City recently joined five other local governments in suing the Trump administration over a new immigration rule tightening green-card and visa eligibility based on immigrants’ use of certain public benefits.

Trump and Mamdani have also differed over immigration enforcement, taxation and foreign policy. Mamdani nevertheless says the two remain in contact.

Earlier this year, he described his relationship with Trump as “honest” and “productive,” while declining to reveal how frequently they speak privately. “I prefer to keep the frequency and the nature of those conversations private,” Mamdani told CBS News, “because that’s the premise of them.”

Now the venue changes. Instead of Mamdani traveling to Washington, Trump will walk into the mayor’s house.

It comes during an unusually busy week in New York, with world leaders descending on Manhattan for the U.N. General Assembly. Trump is scheduled to address the General Assembly Tuesday.

Neither side has disclosed exactly what will be on the table beyond “issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.” And with the meeting closed to reporters, New Yorkers may have to wait until afterward to learn what the city’s most unlikely political odd couple talked about behind the doors of Gracie Mansion.
