BS BULLETIN:

  • Dallas ISD Officer Justin Jones stopped to help a man stranded along a busy freeway Aug. 6 and offered him a ride to safety.
  • Federal prosecutors say Jose Santiago Pantoja-Morales, a 27-year-old Mexican national illegally in the U.S., later grabbed Jones’ gun during a struggle and shot him in the femoral artery.
  • A federal grand jury has now indicted Pantoja-Morales on a firearms charge that carries up to 15 years in prison.

A Dallas school police officer stopped to help a man wandering along a freeway.

Federal prosecutors say the man responded by shooting the officer with his own gun.

A federal grand jury has indicted Jose Santiago Pantoja-Morales, 27, on a charge of possession of a firearm by an illegal alien stemming from the Aug. 6 shooting of Dallas Independent School District Officer Justin Jones.

According to the Justice Department, Pantoja-Morales had jumped out of a co-worker’s vehicle and ended up in the center median of the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway. The co-worker flagged down Jones, who was on routine patrol. Jones picked up Pantoja-Morales and offered to take him somewhere safe.

Then things went very wrong.

Prosecutors allege Pantoja-Morales began rummaging through the officer’s bag in the back seat. Jones stopped the vehicle and attempted to remove him, but Pantoja-Morales resisted, and the two began struggling.

During the fight, prosecutors say Pantoja-Morales grabbed Jones’ firearm and fired one shot. The bullet struck Jones in his right leg and damaged his femoral artery. Jones nevertheless managed to regain control of his weapon.

Pantoja-Morales allegedly fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. Another Dallas ISD officer provided emergency medical treatment to Jones at the scene before he was transported to Parkland Hospital.

The federal grand jury returned its indictment Sept. 16, and the Justice Department announced it Wednesday.

“The illegal alien’s alleged actions in this case represent an attack on the rule of law and a direct threat to public safety,” U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said.

ATF Dallas Special Agent in Charge Brian Garner said Jones “was simply doing his job” when he was attacked.

The federal indictment announced Wednesday does not charge Pantoja-Morales with shooting Jones. It charges him with possessing a firearm while unlawfully present in the United States.

If convicted on that charge, he faces a statutory maximum of 15 years in federal prison. The Justice Department says he is awaiting transfer to federal custody.
