Migrant caravan heads toward U.S. border — DHS has four words for them

  • A migrant caravan dubbed “Faith and Hope” is traveling north through Mexico, with participants saying they intend to reach the United States.
  • The group reportedly has grown to more than 600 migrants after beginning with roughly 300.
  • DHS responded with four words and a perfectly chosen Gandalf GIF: “Our time has come.”

There’s a new migrant caravan heading north through Mexico toward the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security apparently decided a lengthy policy statement wasn’t necessary. Four words would do.

“Our time has come.”

Subtle?

No.

Difficult to misunderstand?

Also no.

DHS went straight to football — and this one was brilliant. The department dropped a hype video featuring Philadelphia Eagles legend Brian Dawkins, whose terrifying “Weapon X” entrance used to signal that somebody on the other team was about to have a very unpleasant afternoon. As Dawkins declares, “The time has come,” the video rolls through some of his biggest hits before DHS delivers its own message: “Our time has come.” It was essentially border enforcement presented as an NFL pregame entrance — and just in case the metaphor wasn’t clear enough, DHS followed it with an image of Dawkins emerging through the smoke beneath three words: “THE BORDER IS CLOSED.” The NFL has already asked DHS to take the video down, which may be the surest sign yet that whoever is running the department’s social-media account knows exactly how to get attention.

The caravan calls itself “Fe y Esperanza” — “Faith and Hope” — and crossed from Guatemala into Mexico last week.

Reuters footage from southern Mexico showed migrants walking along the road carrying the caravan’s banner and a Honduran flag. One Honduran migrant, Oscar Vanegas, was unusually clear about where he hoped the journey would end.

“No one here is driving the caravan, we all left with a dream, a purpose, to reach the United States,” he told Reuters.

The group reportedly began with roughly 300 people but has picked up additional migrants while traveling through southern Mexico, with reports Sunday putting its size above 600. Migrants from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador and Haiti have reportedly joined the group.

Whether the entire caravan ultimately reaches the U.S.-Mexico border is another question.

But unlike previous administrations that might have responded with several pages explaining asylum procedures, humanitarian obligations and processing protocols, Trump’s DHS did not hesitate to deliver a clear message.

Social media users apparently decided to outsource today’s immigration messaging to Middle-earth. And Gandalf of “the Lord of the Rings” had already written the press release.
