An 8½-foot-tall, gold-covered sculpture of a naked President Trump has gone on display inside the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, France.
-
Danish artist Jens Galschiøt calls his creation The Orange Plague, depicting Trump sitting on the shoulders of a struggling man.
-
The intended insult took an unexpected turn when Americans on X suggested the man carrying Trump might actually represent the United States supporting Europe.
European politicians have found another way to express their feelings about Donald Trump.
They’ve put a giant naked gold version of him inside the European Parliament. And apparently, somebody thought this was a profound contribution to international diplomacy.
The sculpture, titled The Orange Plague, stands approximately 8½ feet tall and depicts a nude, gold-covered Trump sitting on the shoulders of a smaller man who appears to be struggling beneath his weight.
Trump holds scales of justice in one hand and an oversized golf club in the other. Naturally, the whole thing is covered in 23-karat gold leaf. Because if you’re going to insult Donald Trump, apparently you might as well decorate him like the lobby at Trump Tower.
🚨🇪🇺🇺🇸NEWS: Horrific Gold Statue of Donald Trump goes on display in the European Parliament
Why would America ever help these people again?
This is beyond pathetic https://t.co/FKDvcB5bkK

The sculpture is the work of Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, who says he drew inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes. Danish European Parliament member Per Clausen arranged for the exhibit inside the Parliament’s Strasbourg building.
The artist’s intended message is straightforward: Trump is a powerful man burdening ordinary people while promising to help them. There’s even an inscription attributed to the fictional King of Injustice, explaining that the powerful man promises to help the person carrying him — except by climbing down.
Very subtle.
But then Americans got a look at the statue. And somebody noticed a rather inconvenient problem with the symbolism.
The sculpture quickly spread across X, where European Parliament member Barbara Bonte criticized the display as disrespectful toward the president of an allied country.
What a disgrace. A gold-plated, naked Donald Trump on a starving man’s back, branded “The Orange Plague,” is on show in the European Parliament in Strasbourg under the guise of “art”. The people who lecture the world on dignity can’t even manage basic respect for the president of a friendly nation. @realDonaldTrump @WhiteHouse

Reactions included a comment that turned the artist’s entire concept on its head: “Imagine the ‘starving man’ is the EU and it all makes perfect sense.”
Well, there goes the art exhibit.
The artist intended to portray Trump as an enormous burden on somebody else. But critics suggested the image could just as easily represent America’s long-standing role in supporting European security.
After all, the United States has provided much of NATO’s military capability for decades, maintained troops and equipment across Europe, and supplied major assistance to Ukraine.
And now European politicians are hosting a statue of the American president sitting on somebody’s back. The visual practically writes its own alternative interpretation.
🚨🇪🇺 I am ASHAMED of the European Parliament
You are disgusting
The mocking statue of President Trump has been unveiled

Other X users questioned whether Europe would be as enthusiastic about displaying similarly insulting sculptures of its own political leaders. Some suggested European governments should spend less time mocking Trump and more time strengthening their own defenses.
Galschiøt has described it as a personal criticism of Trump.
Speaking to The Art Newspaper, the Danish sculptor said his previous work often targeted political systems, while this piece was aimed directly at the American president. The artist also acknowledged that Trump’s enthusiasm for gilded interiors influenced the gold finish.
The installation is temporary, part of a three-day exhibition hosted by Clausen rather than a permanent monument commissioned by the European Parliament.
And visitors were reportedly offered miniature 3D-printed versions of the sculpture. Galschiøt produced approximately 20,000 of them. That’s right. Somewhere in Europe, thousands of people may soon be taking home miniature naked Donald Trumps.
Imagine explaining that souvenir to the family.
The sculpture has previously appeared at demonstrations in Copenhagen and at the COP30 climate conference in Brazil, with another appearance planned for COP31 in Turkey.
For now, there has been no widely reported response from Trump himself.
But the exhibit has already accomplished something rather remarkable: The artist wanted to make a statement about Trump’s power. The internet turned it into an argument about Europe’s dependence on America. And the president didn’t even have to put his pants on.
MY QUICK TAKE
The artist spent who knows how long creating an elaborate political statement, covered the thing in gold, hauled it into the European Parliament, and probably expected everyone to admire the brilliance of his symbolism.
Then some guy on the internet looked at it and essentially said, “Wait a minute. Isn’t America the one carrying Europe?”
One sentence. Entire artistic thesis turned upside down.
And that’s what makes political satire dangerous for the person delivering it. Once you put the joke into the world, you don’t get to control who becomes the punch line.
Now, Europeans are perfectly entitled to mock an American president. That’s freedom of expression, and nobody needs to pretend otherwise.
But there is a certain irony in staging the spectacle inside a political institution representing countries that have relied heavily on American military power.
The artist calls his masterpiece The Orange Plague. Personally, I think Trump might have only one serious complaint. Twenty-three-karat gold? What happened to the other karat?
