Roseanne Barr is back with star-studded new show ‘Meemaw’ – look who’s joining her Hollywood comeback

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • Roseanne Barr has completed an eight-episode comedy series, Meemaw, filmed in Austin, Texas.
  • Randy Quaid, Drea de Matteo, Omar Gooding and Jon Lovitz are among the familiar names involved.
  • Barr raised private financing for the project, which has no announced distributor or premiere date.

Eight years after ABC fired Roseanne Barr and canceled her hit sitcom, the comedian has found a way back into scripted television — without waiting for Hollywood to invite her.

Barr, 73, has quietly completed an eight-episode comedy called Meemaw, featuring Randy Quaid as her husband, The Sopranos star Drea de Matteo as her daughter, and Omar Gooding as her son-in-law.

Jon Lovitz, Doug Jones, and comedian Tony Hinchcliffe are also involved. Viral young performer Indy Bugg plays Barr’s granddaughter.

And the premise sounds like classic Roseanne turned up several notches.

Barr plays a patriotic Texas grandmother heading a mixed-race family of survivalist preppers. She’s determined to take down a criminal empire while throwing her granddaughter an unforgettable bat mitzvah.

The show was independently financed and filmed in Austin. It has not yet secured a network or streaming distributor.

Barr told Page Six Hollywood that Meemaw is every bit as revolutionary as her original sitcom, possibly more. She also made clear that political humor won’t be limited to one side. Her daughters, she explained, are politically progressive, and she included jokes for them, too.

“I’m an equal opportunity destroyer,” Barr declared.

The comeback follows her 2018 firing after a tweet comparing former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to an ape. Barr apologized, but ABC canceled Roseanne and continued the franchise as The Conners, killing off her character.

Now she’s assembled a cast that includes several entertainers who have publicly challenged Hollywood’s political establishment. The reaction online has been enthusiastic among fans.

“Randy Quaid and Jon Lovitz…can’t wait! GO MEEMAW!!!” wrote one X user.

De Matteo was equally excited, celebrating the announcement after keeping the production secret.

Barr delivered her own warning on X: “Meemaw is coming and no one is safe.”
