Monkey in a diaper gets spooked, takes over Halloween store — a cookie saves the day

THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).

  • A pet monkey wearing a diaper escaped its owner inside a Texas Spirit Halloween store and spent roughly 30 minutes swinging from the ceiling.
  • Police were summoned after the monkey apparently got frightened by an animatronic Halloween decoration.
  • The owner finally coaxed the little troublemaker down with a cookie. Nobody was injured, and no charges were filed.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).

Every Halloween, Americans spend millions of dollars trying to scare the living daylights out of themselves.

But at one Spirit Halloween store in Texas, the decorations worked a little too well. And the customer who lost his nerve wasn’t even human.

In an incident that still deserves a seasonal encore, a diaper-wearing pet monkey turned a routine costume-shopping trip into an unscheduled wildlife performance after escaping its owner inside a Spirit Halloween store in Plano, Texas, on October 27, 2025.

According to witnesses, the little fellow apparently encountered one of the store’s animatronic Halloween decorations and decided he’d had quite enough of that nonsense.

Unfortunately for everyone else, his escape route was straight up.

The monkey scrambled onto store fixtures, climbed toward the ceiling and began swinging through the rafters while shoppers watched in disbelief.

One shopper, Arlene Pinkston, was browsing Halloween costumes with her daughters when they spotted something moving overhead.

“This was Animal Kingdom live,” Pinkston told NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.

Her daughter asked whether the creature was actually a monkey. Pinkston figured the diaper was a pretty good clue.

“Well, it’s got a diaper on, so I guess it is real,” she recalled.

And with that, an ordinary shopping trip became the sort of experience you couldn’t purchase even with a 50-percent-off coupon.

Store employee Jimmy Harris said the monkey appeared to have been frightened by one of the animated decorations before slipping away from its owner.

The animal proceeded to climb, swing and generally behave like a monkey in a building conveniently filled with things to climb and swing from.

After approximately half an hour, the Plano Police Department was called in to handle the situation. Now, police officers are trained for a lot of things. Armed robberies. Traffic accidents. Domestic disturbances.

Apparently, diaper-wearing monkeys conducting unauthorized gymnastics above the Halloween merchandise aren’t a standard part of the academy curriculum.

According to the department’s account, responding officers informed the store manager that they were “not a monkey whisperer” but would try to help.

Body-camera footage showed officers looking up as the small brown monkey moved along the ceiling supports. Police determined that the animal wasn’t posing an immediate danger to shoppers or employees.

But getting him down was another matter.

Enter the most sophisticated animal-recovery technology available to mankind. A cookie. The monkey’s owner offered the treat, and suddenly the ceiling lost much of its appeal.

The runaway primate returned to its owner, who secured the animal and left the store after officers advised using a leash to prevent any future shopping expeditions from turning into an episode of Wild Kingdom.

Police reported no injuries, no property damage, and no criminal charges.

Videos of the incident quickly spread across social media, where commenters seemed less concerned about the police response than one rather obvious question.

Why was somebody bringing a monkey to Spirit Halloween in the first place?

One X user asked exactly that, while another offered a perfectly logical explanation: “He was getting his costume.”

Another commenter wondered why a monkey would be frightened in a store devoted to frightening people.

Fair question.

But the best part of this particular Halloween story may be that nobody needed a rescue helicopter, a tranquilizer dart, or a special animal-control task force.

Just a patient owner and a little baked bribery.

And while Spirit Halloween specializes in monsters, ghosts, skeletons, and other creatures designed to make customers scream, it’s hard to imagine anything topping a real monkey swinging above the cash registers.

At least this little guy gave everybody something to remember. And unlike most Halloween decorations, he went home when somebody offered him a snack.
