Anti-ICE protesters block Brooklyn Bridge — working New Yorkers aren’t buying the solidarity

THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).

  • Approximately 30 anti-ICE demonstrators disrupted Brooklyn Bridge traffic Wednesday; police said 14 people were taken into custody.
  • Drivers confronted protesters over getting to work and picking up their children. Even a motorist expressing support wanted the blockade cleared.
  • The protest concerned an ICE shooting in Marble Hill earlier this month. All lanes reopened shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to WABC.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).

Anti-ICE activists brought their message to the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday and discovered that New Yorkers trying to earn a living had a message of their own: move.

The most revealing exchange came from a driver who expressed sympathy with the demonstrators, then pleaded, “but we need to go to work, please!”

Apparently solidarity does not automatically cover the wages lost while somebody else enjoys an afternoon of street theater.

About 30 protesters disrupted traffic near the Manhattan end of the bridge around midday. The NYPD told News 12 that both vehicle and pedestrian traffic were obstructed and that 14 people were taken into custody without incident.

Reporter Oliya Scootercaster’s video captured frustrated motorists confronting the demonstrators. Work obligations featured prominently. So did a responsibility the activists apparently had not worked into their traffic-management plan.

“It’s time to pick up our kids from school!” one person protested.

The demonstration was held in response to an ICE shooting in Marble Hill earlier this month, according to WABC. Participants were demanding that the agency leave New York City.

The immediate result was preventing other people from getting where they needed to go in New York City. A remarkably efficient way to turn an immigration protest into an argument with somebody trying to collect a child.

Not everyone caught in the disruption opposed the protest. The New York Post also reported support from a passenger who objected to ICE deportations. But the sympathetic driver asking to reach work supplied the awkward distinction: agreeing with a cause does not mean volunteering to have your day confiscated by its supporters.

The disruption prompted an official Notify NYC alert at 12:50 p.m., warning of road closures, traffic delays and emergency personnel near the bridge. WABC reported that all lanes reopened shortly before 1:30 p.m.

The protesters wanted an audience. They got workers watching the clock and parents thinking about school dismissal. Convincing those people that you represent their interests becomes considerably harder while you are physically blocking them from taking care of their families.
