TIME magazine swiftly criticized for ‘white nonsense’ Person of the Year choice

by

Fans of Taylor Swift quickly came to her defense after an “anti-racism” activist called out Time magazine for naming her the Person of the Year.

Political activist Saira Rao was torched on social media for her calling the publication’s choice to anoint the multi-Grammy Award singer as just “white nonsense,” in a post on X where she was quickly called out for her take.

“The white American woman billionaire who could end the genocide of Palestinians with on [sic] IG post is TIME Person of The Year,” Rao wrote. “White nonsense, white violence, white love of Black and brown genocide.”

“Rao is the co-founder of Race To Dinner, an organization that facilitates programs focused on conversations about race, and co-founder of Here4TheKids, a group advocating for banning guns and fossil fuels outright,” Daily Mail noted.

Time’s Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs defended the choice, writing, “Taylor Swift found a way to transcend borders and be a source of light. Swift is the rare person who is both the writer and hero of her own story.”

Rao’s history of racist remarks was unfolded on social media as she was raked over the coals for her criticism.

“Historically, conflicts and wars have not ended due to Instagram posts. Therefore, it is extremely unlikely that an Instagram post made by Taylor Swift will end the war in Gaza,” read a portion of the context added by readers on X.

“Wow. This desire for Instagram white saviorism by an American woman billionaire really speaks to some internalized racism that should probably be deconstructed by a Karen over a dinner party for which you pay a couple thousand bucks, so you can decenter your centering of Taylor,” commentator Mary Katherine Ham posted.
