Republicans plan to investigate special counsel Jack Smith and his handling of the classified document case against former President Donald Trump.
In a court filing last week, prosecutors admitted that “there are some boxes where the order of items within that box is not the same as in the associated scans,” referring to documents seized at Trump’s Florida home. This came after prosecutors assured the court that the documents were “in their original, intact form as seized.”
“The Government acknowledges that this is inconsistent with what Government counsel previously understood and represented to the Court,” read a footnote in the filing.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and the House Oversight Committee announced a new investigation into Smith on Monday.

“This acknowledgement presents grave concerns about the Department’s commitment to impartial justice, whether the Special Counsel’s Office misled a federal court, whether the Special Counsel’s Office strenuously upheld the ‘highest professional standards’ of the Department of Justice,” reads Jordan’s letter to the DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
“Accordingly, we write to ask what steps the Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility is undertaking to examine these facts and hold accountable attorneys who violated the standards of professional conduct,” the letter continued.
Speaking with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday, Jordan called out the “irony” of Smith “mishandling the very documents that he’s charging President Trump with mishandling.”
Jordan slammed the “double standard” that allowed President Joe Biden to avoid charges in mishandling classified documents while Trump is being persecuted.
“You can’t make this stuff up,” Jordan said on “Hannity.”
The Ohio Republican said the country “sees through” what Jack Smith, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, and Fulton County DA Fani Willis are doing to Trump in the multiple cases and allegations against him.
