Former President Donald Trump told a New Mexico rally Thursday he was there to strengthen his “credentials” with Hispanic Americans.
Trump addressed supporters in Albuquerque as he trails Vice President Kamala Harris in the state but has been gaining traction with Hispanic voters. He touted his polling numbers and noted the mutual appreciation with the crucial demographic, adding that he believes rallying in New Mexico will resonate with them.

“New Mexico, look, don’t make me waste a whole damn half a day here, okay? Look, I came here — you know, we can be nice to each other or we can talk turkey. Let’s talk turkey, okay? First of all, Hispanics love Trump. They do,” Trump said, receiving cheers and applause. “True. I like them. They’re smart, they’re a lot smarter than the person running for president on the Democrat side. You could say a lot smarter than [President Joe] Biden too, I can tell you … they’re entrepreneurial as hell, they’re great entrepreneurs actually, great small business owners and big business owners too.”
“Did you hear I’m at the highest point of any Republican in history? Okay, that’s one step. Now I’m going to make it of any Democrat also, because I treat you much better than the Democrats. The Democrats, they’re destroying your country. They’re destroying your country,” he added. “So I’m here for one simple reason: I like you very much and it’s good for my credentials with the Hispanic or Latino community.”
Newsmax political analyst Mark Halperin asserted Tuesday that Trump could gain important advantages from New Mexico and other blue states as his campaign comes to a close.
“One is, by going there, he creates a sense of momentum, he creates a sense that he’s on offense and Harris is not,” Halperin said. “Two, if he does win all the battleground states or six of the seven and even one of these blue states [Minnesota, New Hampshire and New Mexico and Virginia], it’ll add to a sense of mandate if he’s victorious.”
“And finally, I could imagine a scenario where he might not win any of the blue wall states, the Great Lake states, but he wins any one of the four states that they’re talking about and basically wins the election through one visit and maybe a little last minute cash,” he added. “So keep your eye on those four states. They probably mean nothing, but it’s possible they’ll mean everything.”
Trump currently holds slight leads over Harris in five of the top seven battleground states, according to the RealClearPolling averages.
