Gavin Newsom’s DOJ is already cooking up legal obstacles to throw in front of Trump

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday called for the state to prepare for legal challenges against the incoming Trump administration.

Just two days after President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, Newsom issued a proclamation for the convening of a special session of the California legislature to discuss increased funding for the state’s DOJ and other executive offices “to support the ability to immediately file affirmative litigation challenging actions taken by the incoming Trump Administration.”

“The special session will focus on bolstering California legal resources to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families,” the press release reads. “This is the first of several actions by the Newsom Administration, in partnership with the Legislature, as the Governor begins shoring up California’s defenses against an incoming federal administration that has threatened the state on multiple fronts.”

Newsom also announced plans to fight the Trump administration over legal protections for LGBT people, the press release stated.

“Gavin Newsom was elected to govern California, not to be the head of the Trump resistance,” California Assemblyman Bill Essayli told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “If he wants to engage in cheap political theater, he should do it on his own dime, not the taxpayers.”

“We learned a lot about former President Trump in his first term — he’s petty, vindictive, and will do what it takes to get his way no matter how dangerous the policy may be,” Mike McGuire, California Senate president pro tempore, said in a statement. “California has come too far and accomplished too much to simply surrender and accept his dystopian vision for America. This is why we’re moving with speed and investing in our legal defense.”

Trump often butted heads with California during his first term, including when he threatened to enforce immigration policy in the state to close off the southern border. Then-California Attorney General Xavier Becerra considered suing Trump, with the now president-elect attempting to carry the issue to the Supreme Court over California’s migrant sanctuary law that prevented cooperation with federal immigration officials.
