Tucker Carlson calls for Trump’s Cabinet to remove him: ‘Bundled up and taken out’

Carlson then delivered the whopper: Trump “should have been bundled up and taken out.”

Tucker Carlson’s break with President Donald Trump just went somewhere few people would have imagined during the 2024 campaign. The former Fox News host is now openly calling for Trump’s own Cabinet to remove him from office under the 25th Amendment.

Carlson made the comments during an interview with NPR’s Steve Inskeep published Thursday as the two discussed Trump, the Iran war and the president’s recent threats against Tehran.

Carlson said Trump should have been removed “by his own Cabinet secretaries” when the president threatened a nuclear attack.

Inskeep stopped him to make sure there was no ambiguity: Was Carlson calling for the 25th Amendment?

Carlson said yes. Then came the line likely to follow this story around:

“He should have been bundled up and taken out.”

Carlson called Trump’s threat a crime and argued there was “no greater crime” than threatening a first-use nuclear strike. The comments follow Trump’s speech at the United Nations this week, where the president presented Iran with a stark choice between reaching a deal and facing annihilation.

Trump asked whether Iran would make a deal allowing it to rebuild or whether he would “annihilate the Islamic Republic” and deny it any chance of recovery for generations.

Carlson characterized that language as a threat to use nuclear weapons. The reporting I found does not establish that Trump explicitly said in the UN remarks that he would use nuclear weapons; that is Carlson’s interpretation of the threat.

This also wasn’t Carlson’s first move in this direction. In late August, he said any president actively contemplating first use of nuclear weapons should be removed “immediately.” Thursday’s interview went considerably further by explicitly identifying the 25th Amendment and saying Trump’s Cabinet should have acted.

MY QUICK TAKE

“Bundled up and taken out” is the line here.

Whatever you make of Tucker’s argument about Iran, we’ve traveled a very long way from his speaking on Trump’s behalf at the 2024 Republican convention to publicly calling on Trump’s own Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment.

And he didn’t leave himself much wiggle room for the inevitable “that’s not what I meant” cleanup tour. Inskeep asked the obvious follow-up. Tucker said, essentially, yes, that’s exactly what I mean.
