DC food workers vow to make daily life uncomfortable for Trump Administration staff

by

Food workers in Washington, D.C., are acting like spoiled children as they declare they will not be welcoming members of the incoming Trump administration.

Whiny workers may need to look back over the consequences other businesses faced when taking a political stand in their workplaces. For now, servers, bartenders and others in the food industry in the nation’s capital told the Washingtonian they are on a mission to make the next four years uncomfortable for Republicans.

“The shift in politics will be visceral across several aspects of daily life. You expect the masses to just ignore RFK eating at Le Diplomate on a Sunday morning after a few mimosas and not to throw a drink in his face?,” asked Zac Hoffman, a DC restaurant veteran now a manager at the National Democratic Club.

“If you’re just going out for a nice dinner or it’s your anniversary or birthday and, God forbid, RFK Jr. is sitting next to you, now you’re going to be dealing with whatever repercussions happen from that.” Hoffman told the outlet.

President-elect Donald Trump’s first term in office saw multiple incidents in which Republicans were harassed while dining at D.C.-area restaurants. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., famously called on people to “push back” on Trump Cabinet members in 2018 and tell them “they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”

Rather than do their jobs and take their protests elsewhere, petulant employees are vowing to use their workplaces as a platform for their grievances.

“This person theoretically has the power to take away your rights, but I have the power to make you wait 20 minutes to get your entrée,” a bartender named Nancy told the Washingtonian.”There’s a lot of opportunities for us as workers to feel like we’re taking our power back, while not necessarily ruining someone’s life. Giving them a subtle inconvenience feels like a little bit of a win for us.”

She declared she would quit “on the spot” if forced to serve certain Trump officials.

“There is power in making it known that you’re not comfortable with a situation, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be this big dramatic show,” she said. “It’s just little bits of resistance that add up, and little bits of resistance that other people will see and hopefully feel empowered to stand on those convictions as well.”

“I personally would refuse to serve any person in office who I know of as being a sex trafficker or trying to deport millions of people,” said Suzannah Van Rooy, a server and manager at Beuchert’s Saloon. “It’s not, ‘Oh, we hate Republicans.’ It’s that this person has moral convictions that are strongly opposed to mine, and I don’t feel comfortable serving them.”

In one eyebrow-raising take, a bartender named Joseph who voted for Vice President Kamala Harris, told the outlet that he dreads serving Republicans but admitted they are preferable from a bartending viewpoint.

“I think my tip average from Republicans—at least ones that I or a coworker has recognized—is close to 30 percent. With Dems, I’m surprised if it’s over 20,” he said, adding that GOP diners ask for simpler drinks while Democrats have more special requests.

One restaurant host plans to look up every Trump administration figure so she can give them a bad table when they come into the establishment.

“I’ll only give them a bad table but will otherwise guarantee decent and polite service,” she said. “I feel like them getting a bad table is nothing compared to the harm they’ll be inflicting.”

“Ultimately, the majority of restaurant owners and workers aren’t going to want the negative attention that comes with a big messy confrontation. But some may turn to discreet acts of resistance aimed less at causing a scene and more at empowering themselves in small ways,” the Washingtonian noted.

Social media users gave the whiny workers a reality check.

  1. If such happens, maybe enough “injured” people complaining to the management of the service and how either the server is reprimanded / removed or they won’t be back will have an effect on their attitude.

  2. Just because I don’t share the same beliefs as someone doesn’t mean I don’t serve them, or inconvenience them. If everyone did this, their would be an even worse separation/division of people and Americans when we are supposed to be united in purpose while maintaining different beliefs.
If I owned a restaurant and my employees were doing this, I would definitely have to let them go. Restaurant employees are to show respect to customers, for they represent the restaurant, and not themselves

  3. Beat them to the punch and don’t frequent these establishments.
