Tapper is dumbfounded by Trump’s new Epstein assertion: ‘one of the most bizarre conspiracy theories I’ve ever heard’

by

CNN anchor Jake Tapper has openly rejected President Donald Trump’s recent assertion that documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were manipulated to falsely implicate him. Trump, once known to associate socially with Epstein, has denied any involvement in Epstein’s crimes. Nevertheless, his administration’s Justice Department has declined to release additional information from the files.

During a segment on The Lead aired Monday, Tapper was joined by Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who provided insight into the handling of Epstein-related investigations during his tenure. When Tapper inquired whether Bharara’s office had received any complaints or allegations involving Epstein, Bharara responded, “Not across my desk, no.”

Bharara took the opportunity to raise one of his concerns: the recent firing of federal prosecutor Maurene Comey. Comey had previously worked on the high-profile Epstein case in New York and was known for her role in pursuing legal action against the disgraced financier. Her sudden termination by Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this month raised eyebrows.

“There’s a lot still to learn,” Bharara emphasized. “Why on Earth Maurene Comey, who is one of the people in this whole long drawn out saga who actually had something to do with affirmatively bringing Jeffrey Epstein to justice, why she was fired.”

Tapper then addressed Trump’s recent claim that political opponents might have tampered with the Epstein documents to frame him. Trump has suggested that Democrats may have inserted falsified content into the files to damage his reputation. Gee, wherever would he get a shocking idea like that?

Tapper responded bluntly: “Yeah, there’s also this madness, this accusation. Like, ‘Oh, there might be people who are Trump haters [who] might’ve put stuff in the Epstein documents… to make it look bad for him.’ This is one of the most bizarre conspiracy theories I’ve ever heard.”

Again, really, Jake?

Bharara interjected, noting the logical inconsistency in Trump’s claim: “Not act on it,” he said, referring to the idea that such evidence would simply be planted and left untouched.

Tapper followed up, stating, “Yeah, like do it in 2016 or do it in 2020 when they’re trying to, or 2024 when they’re trying to defeat Donald Trump. But then just put it there and hope somebody finds it.”

Adding further intrigue, in July 2025, newly unsealed court documents from a civil suit related to Epstein’s estate were made public. These documents include references to several previously unnamed associates and hinted at broader financial ties between Epstein and unnamed political figures.
