In a fiery and unapologetic appearance at a MoveOn political event in Phoenix, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) launched a scathing critique of President Donald Trump, the U.S. Supreme Court, and what she described as a systemic breakdown of accountability in American democracy. Drawing loud applause from the progressive crowd, Crockett did not hold back her frustration.
“Listen, Donald Trump is a piece of shit, OK?” Crockett declared, sparking cheers and a standing ovation. “We know that. Yes, yes! He is, he is! But in a functioning democracy, he still would not be able to get away with this.”
While her blunt criticism of Trump made headlines, Crockett’s larger message focused on what she sees as institutional failure. She placed particular blame on the U.S. Supreme Court, accusing it of lacking ethical guardrails and failing to serve as a check on executive overreach.
“He’s been able to get away with this because the House Republicans are complicit,” Crockett continued. “He’s been able to get away with this because Senate Republicans are complicit. But most importantly, the courts — especially the Supreme Court — are complicit! … They are the highest court in the land and they have no ethics guardrails.”
Crockett’s accusations reflect a growing faux concern among progressives about the ethical integrity of the Supreme Court.
“Now you go down to the lower courts, and they do [have ethics rules]. How much sense does that make?” Crockett asked rhetorically. “Well, we know that they’re taking money. We have the paper trail. And they refuse to put guardrails on themselves. So it’s time for us to do it for them.”
Crockett also took aim at her home state of Texas, where Republican-led redistricting efforts are threatening her political future. A proposed new congressional map could shift district boundaries to favor GOP candidates, potentially eliminating up to five Democratic-held seats — including her own. Crockett has denounced the proposal as a blatant power grab and another example of democratic erosion.
“The Texas legislature isn’t just complicit — they’re actively working to undermine representation,” she said. “This redistricting plan is designed to silence voices like mine, and I won’t be quiet about it.”
The congresswoman has recently found herself in the spotlight for other reasons as well. Last week, she faced criticism for attempting to halt the publication of a profile in The Atlantic after learning that the reporter was contacting her colleagues for background — a common journalistic practice.
Despite the backlash, Crockett appears undeterred. Her remarks in Phoenix signal that she has no intention of moderating her tone or her message. “If the institutions won’t police themselves, then it’s up to us — the people — to force the issue,” she told the crowd.
