‘Sir, why are you on the roof?’ Trump shouts to startled reporters from White House roof

by

In a move as unconventional as his presidency, Donald Trump made a rare and unexpected appearance atop the White House’s West Wing on Tuesday, hinting at future renovations that could reshape the iconic estate — all at his own expense.

Emerging with an entourage, Trump stepped out onto the roof of the Palm Room and the press briefing room — a flat, one-story section of the West Wing — offering a clear view of the recently refurbished Rose Garden. The president’s appearance startled reporters gathered below, who shouted up questions.

“Sir, why are you on the roof?” one reporter yelled. Another followed with, “Mr. President, what are you doing up there?”

With his characteristic bravado, Trump offered only a brief response, flashing a fist pump and saying, “Taking a little walk.”

While there’s no historical record of any previous president stepping out onto this section of the White House roof, Trump seemed at ease, even playful, gesturing with his hands to mimic a dome and teasing possible future construction.

“There could be something beautiful up here,” he said cryptically. “More ways to spend my money. We’ll show you.”

Trump emphasized that any renovations would be self-funded. “Anything I do is financed by me so you don’t have to worry, it’s contributed,” he added. “Just like my salary is contributed — but nobody ever mentions that.”

The surprise rooftop walkabout came just days after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that construction would soon begin on a long-anticipated East Wing expansion. The $200 million project includes the addition of a new White House ballroom — the first of its kind on the property — located on the other side of the residence, near First Lady Melania Trump’s offices.

According to Leavitt, groundbreaking on the East Wing addition is slated for September. Trump stated that he would personally fund all or part of the construction, with the remainder coming from private donors.

When asked again by reporters about his rooftop plans, Trump, in typical fashion, turned the moment into a joke: “We’re building nuclear missiles on the roof,” he quipped, before retreating back into the residence.

The president’s comments came amid the final phase of the Rose Garden’s transformation — another major White House landscaping project overseen during his administration. When asked how he felt about the result, Trump was enthusiastic.

“We’re getting great reviews of the Rose Garden and we had to do it,” he said. “When we had a press conference, you’d sink into the mud. It was always wet, always damp. If it rained, it would take three, four, five days to dry out — and we couldn’t really use it for its intended purpose.”

In the new design, the lawn’s muddy center was replaced with a white stone patio, described by Trump as both functional and elegant. “It’s a beautiful white stone, the same color as the White House itself,” he noted. “And because it’s very white, it reflects the heat — it’s not going to be very hot.”

Adding a patriotic touch, the patio’s drainage system was designed in the shape of the American flag, and the presidential seal was embedded in its corners — symbolic flourishes in keeping with Trump’s often showy aesthetic.

Since returning to the White House earlier this year, Trump has also installed two towering American flags on the North and South Lawns, further reinforcing his penchant for high-visibility symbolism.
