AOC sounds alarm over ‘modern-day lynchings’ — then Grok starts checking the cases

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said 10 Black Americans have reportedly been found hanged this year and joined Rep. Ayanna Pressley in demanding a federal investigation.
AOC characterized the cases as “widespread modern-day lynchings” and “racial terror.”
Elon Musk asked Grok to examine the cases individually, and the AI chatbot responded that most it could identify had been ruled suicides with no evidence of foul play, while some cases remain disputed or unresolved.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sounded an extraordinary alarm Friday, warning that Black Americans are being subjected to “modern-day lynchings” across the country.

Then Elon Musk asked Grok to check the cases.

“This year, there have already been 10 reported hangings of Black people in the U.S.,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X.

The New York Democrat said she had signed onto a letter from Rep. Ayanna Pressley seeking federal action “to address these widespread modern-day lynchings and put a stop to this racial terror.”

Pressley used similarly alarming language.

“Black folks are being found hanged in America,” she wrote, calling it a “national crisis” and demanding a federal investigation.

Those are serious allegations — and they quickly drew questions about exactly what happened in the cases the lawmakers were citing. Musk jumped into AOC’s replies with a straightforward request for his platform’s Grok chatbot:

“List each of these hangings and identify the race of the murderer.”

Grok’s answer complicated the picture considerably.

According to Grok’s review of the publicly reported cases, most it identified had been officially ruled suicides or otherwise had no evidence of foul play. Some families have disputed official conclusions, and not every case has been definitively resolved.

Most of the 2026 cases cited (Kyle Bassinga GA, Juliana Nzita NC, To’Nea Miller FL, Justice James GA, Jerard Jackson MI, Raleigh 32yo NC, others) were officially ruled suicides with no evidence of foul play or any murderer.

Grok said one case involving Tasia Fortune in Mississippi was being investigated as a homicide, while another involving Demetrius Fleming in North Carolina remained open or unresolved.

The chatbot concluded that none of the cases it reviewed had an identified non-Black murderer. Musk subsequently shared Grok’s findings and accused AOC of publishing a “misleading post that fans the flames of hate.”

The exchange quickly exploded across X as users began asking Grok themselves to identify the individual cases and their investigative status.

Pressley and Ocasio-Cortez are asking federal authorities to examine the deaths together rather than relying solely upon individual local investigations. That leaves a legitimate question for investigators to answer. It also leaves AOC’s much broader characterization facing considerable scrutiny.
