Civilian chases teen gunman, ends deadly Oregon school-shooter attack after four killed

THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).

  • A civilian followed a 16-year-old gunman into an Oregon elementary school and fatally shot him, police say.
  • The attacker killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. Another child and teacher were critically wounded.
  • Police say the teenager shot through locked school doors to get inside. Oregon’s governor praised the civilian for stopping further bloodshed.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).

A teenage gunman shot his way into an Oregon elementary school Thursday. But someone outside saw what was happening, followed him into the building and confronted him with a gun.

Police say that civilian fatally shot the attacker.

By then, four innocent people were dead — three little children and a teacher. Two others were fighting for their lives.

And while investigators work to establish exactly what happened inside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, one fact stands out: The person who stopped the gunman wasn’t a responding police officer.

It was a member of the community.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz described the extraordinary sequence during a Thursday evening news conference. “An officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Krantz said.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, a Democrat, publicly thanked the civilian. “And to the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life, your actions carry a heavy emotional burden – and my thoughts are with you,” she said.

That’s an extraordinary act of courage. Someone saw an armed attacker entering a school full of children and, rather than fleeing, followed him inside.

Police have not identified that person or explained the circumstances under which the civilian was armed. Those details matter, and investigators are expected to provide more information.

But the broad outline of the attack is already horrifying.

At approximately 12:59 p.m. Pacific time Thursday, October 15, police received a 911 call from a person in a vehicle reporting that someone with a long gun had fired at them. More calls quickly followed from Silver Rail Elementary.

According to Krantz, the 16-year-old suspect forced his way into the school by shooting through locked doors. The school was directed to lock down at 1:01 p.m. Officers arrived approximately one minute later. The suspect was found dead inside the building after the civilian confrontation.

Three children — ages 5, 8 and 11 — and a teacher were killed. A 7-year-old child and another teacher, 54, were hospitalized in critical condition. The victims’ names had not been publicly released in the latest confirmed reports. Authorities also had not disclosed a motive or established whether the teenager had attended the school or knew anyone there.

The Associated Press reported, citing an unnamed law enforcement official, that the attacker used a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother. Police had not publicly confirmed that detail.

Investigators must now answer how the teenager obtained the weapon, what led him to the school and whether anyone missed warning signs before the attack. FBI Director Kash Patel said federal agents were assisting local investigators. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also involved.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook called the shooting an “unthinkable tragedy.”

“We are heartbroken. We are horrified,” Cook said.

Kotek spoke about visiting Silver Rail Elementary roughly a year earlier, when educators were celebrating improvements in student attendance. “I heard the joy and excitement about their school,” she recalled.

Now that same school is the scene of a nightmare. “All Oregonians mourn the loss of life today,” Kotek said. “This is a horrible day. No parent should have this day. No community should live through this day.”

Classes and activities throughout the Bend-La Pine school district were canceled Friday.

There will be plenty of questions about school security, the shooter’s background and the circumstances that put a firearm in his hands.

But one question has already received a remarkable answer.

Who stopped him?

According to police, an ordinary member of the community who made an extraordinary decision. That intervention cannot bring back the four lives lost. Nothing can. But as Oregon mourns, the governor herself has acknowledged that the civilian’s actions prevented further loss of life. And that deserves to be part of the story from the very beginning.
