In yet another example of liberal media underestimating the power of their own rhetoric, CNN’s Abby Phillip may have accidentally handed conservatives a gift. During a recent segment mocking President Donald Trump’s aggressive stance on crime in Washington, D.C., Phillip sarcastically referred to Trump as “crimefighter-in-chief” and “Batman.” But instead of sparking ridicule, the remarks were quickly embraced by Trump supporters, who wore the label like a badge of honor.
The segment aired on CNN’s NewsNight on Monday, with Phillip opening coverage of Trump’s newly announced deployment of National Guard troops to the nation’s capital. Her tone was unmistakably mocking when she said, “Donald Trump makes himself Batman and the nation’s capital is Gotham City.” She went on to say, “The President of the United States has declared himself crime-fighter-in-chief, and he’s taking over Washington’s police force.”
The left may have meant it as a jab, but to conservatives, it sounded more like a rallying cry.
President Trump had just declared a “public safety emergency” in Washington, D.C., calling it one of the most “dangerous” cities in the world. And while the liberal media raced to defend the local government’s track record, the reality on the ground tells a different story. According to Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) statistics, which are being questioned by some of their own officials, violent crime is down 26% compared to last year — but that number masks the real concerns of D.C. residents. The same MPD data shows that there have already been 100 homicides this year alone, a staggering figure for a city of its size.
Mayor Muriel Bowser quickly pushed back against Trump’s move, calling it “unsettling” and attempting to soothe fears by pointing to the drop in overall crime rates. But residents and observers alike know that statistics can be manipulated or framed to tell a preferred story — and the lived reality in many D.C. neighborhoods doesn’t match the data points politicians use to defend their policies.
Trump supporters were quick to accept Phillip’s Batman remark, turning the sarcastic swipe into a full-blown meme campaign. Conservative commentator Steve Guest posted on X, “That makes President Trump sound SUPER COOL! Don’t think that was Abby’s intention at all.” The conservative satire outlet The Babylon Bee jumped into the fray too, posting a meme of Trump dressed as the Dark Knight, standing watch over Gotham — or, in this case, Washington.
To make matters even more serendipitous, supporters resurfaced a light-hearted moment from 2015, when Trump was riding in a helicopter with a young boy. When asked if he was Batman, Trump smiled and replied, “I am Batman.” The video quickly went viral again, reinforcing the image of a leader unafraid to take on the bad guys — both on the streets and in the political swamp.
While the mainstream media continues to mock and deride Trump’s bold approach to crime and public safety, many Americans are seeing leadership that’s been sorely lacking in Democratic-run cities. Washington, D.C., has long been plagued by crime, bureaucracy, and ineffective leadership. Trump stepping in as a self-declared “crimefighter” — even if dubbed that sarcastically — resonates with voters tired of chaos and craving order.
The irony? The more the liberal media tries to ridicule Trump, the more relatable and iconic they make him to the very voters they’re trying to sway. Like Batman in Gotham, Trump has positioned himself as the outsider willing to do what the political elite won’t: protect American lives and restore law and order.

Give’em hell, “Batman”!
